Cape May to Hold Annual Blessing of the Waters Ceremony April 11

Cape May will host its annual Blessing of the Waters ceremony on Saturday, April 11, continuing a long-standing tradition that honors local fishermen who have lost their lives at sea while offering prayers for a safe and productive fishing season. The event will take place at 11 a.m. at the Fisherman’s Memorial, located along the harbor. Community members, local officials, and members of the fishing industry are expected to gather for the solemn observance, which has been held annually at the memorial since 2008. The ceremony serves as both a remembrance and a reflection of Cape May’s deep connection to its maritime roots. It recognizes the sacrifices made by those in the commercial fishing industry and highlights the profession’s importance to the region’s economy and cultural identity. In addition to honoring those who have been lost, the event looks ahead to the upcoming season, offering blessings for safety, calm waters, and success for those who make their living at sea. The gathering is free and open to the public, inviting the broader community to take part in the tribute.

$99 Million Secured for South Jersey Beach Replenishment Projects

South Jersey will receive $99 million in federal funding for beach replenishment projects in several coastal towns, alongside additional dredging investments. The funding, provided through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will support critical shoreline work in Ocean City, Strathmere, Sea Isle City, Avalon, and Stone Harbor. The investment stands out as one of the largest commitments to New Jersey beach projects in a year without a hurricane, highlighting the growing urgency of proactive coastal protection. The funding is expected to restore eroded beaches, reinforce dunes, and strengthen defenses for shore communities that rely heavily on tourism and face ongoing environmental challenges.

Two Arrested in Cape May County Weapons, Drugs, and Stolen Vehicle Case

Two Cape May County men have been arrested and charged following an investigation into a stolen vehicle that led to the discovery of weapons, firearm components, and drugs. Authorities say the case expanded from a car theft report into a broader probe involving illegal weapons manufacturing and narcotics. Authorities identified 42-year-old Brian Henderson of Wildwood as a suspect after a stolen vehicle was reported to North Wildwood police on December 28. The following day, officers located both Henderson and the vehicle in Wildwood. A court-approved search uncovered a range of tactical and weapon-related items, including a ballistic vest, firearm accessories, large-capacity magazines, ammunition, suppressors, and surveillance equipment. Henderson now faces multiple charges tied to weapons offenses, possession of prohibited devices, and theft of a motor vehicle. As the investigation progressed, officials examined evidence that led them to 47-year-old Calvin Fabio of Burleigh, who was identified as an alleged accomplice.
