NJ Beach Sweeps Return Saturday with Dozens of Shoreline Cleanup Sites

New Jersey’s coastline is set for a major cleanup effort this weekend as Clean Ocean Action launches its 41st annual Beach Sweeps on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event spans 80 locations statewide, including 20 sites across Atlantic, and Cape May counties. What began in 1985 as a modest cleanup with just 75 volunteers has evolved into a large-scale environmental initiative. Over the years, more than 176,000 participants have helped remove approximately 8.7 million pieces of debris from New Jersey’s beaches. In addition to collecting trash, volunteers will document the types of debris they find. This data helps environmental groups better understand pollution trends and develop strategies to reduce waste. Recent cleanups have shown a rise in discarded reusable shopping bags and dental floss picks, alongside consistently common items like plastic bottles, cigarette butts, vape cartridges, plastic utensils, and foam cups. Occasionally, more unusual items turn up during the sweeps, reflecting the wide range of debris that reaches the shoreline. During the last event, volunteers collected more than 276,000 items, including unexpected finds such as diapers, syringes, holiday decorations, and even large household objects. Local cleanup sites in Cape May County and surrounding areas include the Nature Center of Cape May, North Wildwood’s Hereford Inlet Beach, the Ocean City Music Pier, and several boardwalk and beach access points in Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, Villas, Wildwood Crest, and Wildwood.

UK Media and Local Leaders Spotlight Cape May’s Timeless Coastal Appeal

Cape May has recently found itself in the spotlight, in a campaign spot, Mayor Mullock spoke of an article from across the Atlantic. The UK’s Daily Express has highlighted the town, praising its unique charm and coastal appeal. The feature told what many of us already know, it described Cape May as a coastal gem at the southern tip of New Jersey and recognized it as one of the best places to retire in the United States. This recognition stems from its strong combination of livability, character, and seaside lifestyle. A nationwide study assessing factors such as income levels, cost of living, safety, and overall quality of life ranked New Jersey among the top states for relocation in 2026, with Cape May standing out as a premier destination for retirees. Known for its distinctive identity, Cape May offers a walkable historic setting filled with well-preserved Victorian homes, boutique shops, and a vibrant dining scene. Often described as a place that feels untouched by time, it seamlessly blends old-world architecture with modern comforts. Its coastal setting provides scenic beaches and a relaxed pace of life, making it especially appealing to those seeking a comfortable retirement. Warm summers and easy access to outdoor activities further enhance its appeal. Beyond its natural beauty, Cape May fosters a strong sense of community, supported by cultural attractions and convenient amenities. As one of the oldest seaside resorts in the country, it continues to attract both visitors and long-term residents who value its historic charm. With clean beaches, pedestrian-friendly streets, and one of the largest concentrations of Victorian architecture in the United States, Cape May continues to earn recognition as a standout destination for those looking to enjoy a peaceful yet vibrant coastal lifestyle. We share many of these stories written about Cape May and for us, they never get old. It was good to get some appreciation from ‘across the pond.’

Car Fire Slows Traffic on Garden State Parkway Near Exit 6

A vehicle fire caused a brief disruption Tuesday evening on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway just north of Exit 6 in Middle Township. The incident temporarily blocked the right lane and shoulder as flames engulfed the front end of the car. The vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time, burned for several minutes before emergency crews arrived. Middle Township Police were first on scene, directing traffic as vehicles carefully passed the burning car. Firefighters from Middle Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 responded quickly and brought the situation under control using foam to extinguish the flames. Some burning fuel had spread onto nearby grass, but crews were able to contain it before it caused further damage. No injuries were reported, and the fire was extinguished shortly after firefighters arrived.
