Group Challenges NOAA Narrative on Whale Deaths Along East Coast

Protect Our Coast New Jersey (POCNJ), based in Ocean City, submitted a formal request to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick urging a review of information published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The group contends that federal reports disproportionately attribute whale mortality—particularly among North Atlantic right whales—to the fishing industry, while not adequately considering offshore wind-related activities. The organization disputes NOAA’s position that there is no confirmed scientific connection between offshore wind surveys and whale deaths. According to POCNJ, such statements present an incomplete picture and may mislead the public. The group points to offshore wind construction processes—including geophysical surveys, pile driving, and trenching—as sources of intense underwater noise that could disrupt marine mammals by interfering with their communication, navigation, and hearing. POCNJ also highlights what it describes as a concerning rise in whale deaths beginning around 2017, a period it says coincides with increased offshore wind development along the East Coast. The group argues that this overlap warrants further investigation and more cautious public communication from federal agencies. POCNJ is urging federal officials to update public-facing materials to reflect a broader range of scientific perspectives and ensure that coastal communities and fishing industries are not unfairly represented. The group has indicated it is willing to provide further documentation and engage in dialogue with federal agencies.
Rare Meteor Lights Up New Jersey Sky, Rattles Homes Across Region

A rare meteor blazing through the daytime sky startled residents across New Jersey and much of the Northeast this week, producing both a vivid visual display and powerful shockwaves felt across multiple states. The fast-moving object tore through the atmosphere Tuesday afternoon at speeds exceeding 30,000 miles per hour, becoming visible despite the brightness of midday. Its path began high above the Atlantic Ocean near Long Island before cutting southwest across several states. The meteor ultimately broke apart roughly 27 miles above Galloway Township, New Jersey. The event drew widespread attention, with more than 200 sightings reported across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Astronomers note that this time of year typically brings increased meteor activity, as Earth passes through regions of space containing more debris. While most meteors burn up harmlessly, occasional larger events like this one can create striking displays and widespread attention. Although dramatic, the fireball posed no danger on the ground. Researchers continue to analyze footage and reports to better understand its trajectory and composition, with no confirmed fragments recovered so far.
