Cape May Zoo Celebrates Second Capybara Birth in Six Months

The Cape May County Park and Zoo has announced the birth of two new capybara pups on April 14, marking the second litter born to Buttercup in just six months. The newborns join an already growing group that includes four adult capybaras and five older pups from the previous litter, making the exhibit a lively and popular destination for visitors. Zoo staff and veterinary teams are carefully monitoring the mother and her babies to ensure they remain healthy, with the animals occasionally kept off exhibit to reduce stress. However, guests still have opportunities to catch a glimpse of the pups from a viewing bridge overlooking the habitat. Capybaras, native to South America, are the world’s largest rodents and are known for their social behavior and semi-aquatic lifestyle. They typically live near bodies of water and thrive in groups. Newborn capybaras develop quickly, often walking within hours of birth and beginning to eat grass within their first week, while continuing to nurse for several months. The new arrivals further enhance the zoo’s capybara exhibit, which continues to draw strong interest from families and wildlife enthusiasts.
