Cape May MAC Opens ‘First & Only’ Exhibit Celebrating Historic Milestones

Cape May is preparing to celebrate a milestone moment in its history with a new exhibit opening at the Emlen Physick Estate on May 1. The exhibit, titled Cape May: First & Only, highlights the city’s historic legacy while looking ahead to its future as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. Curated by Cape May MAC Curator Ben Ridings and President Janet Coupland, with exhibit design by Steven Olszewski, the showcase opens Friday, May 1 at 4 p.m. at the Carroll Gallery inside the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. The exhibit will remain open through Nov. 2. The exhibit commemorates two major milestones for Cape May that coincide with the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration in 2026: the 175th anniversary of the city’s incorporation and the 50th anniversary of its designation as a National Historic Landmark. Cape May continues to hold the distinction of being recognized as “America’s First Seaside Resort” and the country’s only National Historic Landmark City. As part of the opening event, renowned artist and architect Len Tantillo will unveil two original paintings created for Cape May MAC. One painting depicts the Emlen Physick Estate, while the second portrays Dr. Emlen Physick. The paintings will be donated to the organization, and prints will be available for purchase as part of a fundraising effort benefiting Cape May MAC.

Wildwood’s Giant Wheel Nears Completion Ahead of Summer Season

The Ferris wheel, a signature attraction at Morey’s Piers, has been undergoing a major overhaul ahead of the 2026 summer season. Work has included upgrades to key mechanical components, along with the refurbishment of all 40 gondolas to enhance the ride experience. During the renovation process, several steel parts were taken from a temporary work site near the beach. Authorities later identified and charged the individual responsible, and replacement materials have since been secured. Despite the incident, crews have continued working to keep the project on schedule. Officials say the goal remains to have the Giant Wheel fully assembled and operational by the end of May, just in time for the start of the busy summer season. The return of the towering ride is expected to once again light up the Wildwood skyline and draw visitors back to the boardwalk, marking a key milestone as the shore prepares for another summer.

Coast Guard Member Stationed in Cape May Named 2026 Coast Guardsman of the Year

Yeoman Second Class Cody Dmochowski, 25, a Brick Township native, was named the 2026 USO Coast Guardsman of the Year, reported by 98.7 The Coast, following his heroic actions after witnessing a motorcycle crash in Jackson Township in July 2025. He also received the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for his lifesaving efforts. Dmochowski and his girlfriend, Adrianna Bollaro, were driving through a wooded area when they saw a vehicle collide head-on with a motorcycle, sending the rider airborne into nearby woods. Dmochowski immediately turned his vehicle around and rushed to help while Bollaro contacted emergency responders. The injured rider suffered severe injuries, including a compound fracture and heavy blood loss. Using a blanket from his car, Dmochowski worked to control the bleeding and shield the victim from thick brush and thorns while carefully instructing him to remain still to avoid worsening possible spinal injuries. Training Center Cape May, Dmochowski serves as a company commander, one of a select group responsible for training Coast Guard recruits. Coast Guard officials praised his leadership, professionalism, and dedication to service, noting that his actions reflected the organization’s highest standards both on and off duty. Dmochowski joined the Coast Guard six years ago after encouragement from his father, a Navy veteran. He said the Coast Guard has provided him with opportunities and purpose while reinforcing the value of hard work and service.
