Spirit Airlines Shuts Down After 34 Years, Impact Felt at Atlantic City Airport

Yesterday’s maybe becomes official. Spirit Airlines has shut down after 34 years in operation, canceling all flights effective May 2, 2026, and ending service nationwide. The airline announced an immediate wind-down of operations, advising customers not to come to airports because customer service and airport staffing were no longer available. Refunds are expected to be automatically issued, but passengers will not be rebooked on other airlines. Locally, the closure raises major questions about the future of Atlantic City International Airport, where Spirit had long been one of the airport’s most visible carriers. However, airport officials and transportation experts believe ACY remains positioned for continued growth thanks to recent expansion efforts by Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways, both of which are adding new routes and destinations. Atlantic County officials say the airport’s convenience, easy parking, and growing airline presence continue to make it attractive to travelers and potential carriers. Analysts predict other low-cost airlines, including Allegiant or Frontier, may eventually move to fill some of the routes and passenger demand left behind by Spirit’s departure.
Inaugural Run Through History 5K Set for May 9 in Cape May

Cape May will combine fitness, history, and community spirit during the inaugural Run Through History 5K on Saturday, May 9, 2026, inviting runners and walkers to experience the city’s nationally recognized historic district in a unique way. The family-friendly event begins and ends at Lafayette Street Park and features a flat, fast course winding through Cape May’s Victorian streets, cultural landmarks, and coastal scenery. Participants of all experience levels are encouraged to take part, whether competing for a personal best or simply enjoying the historic atmosphere along the route. Race check-in and same-day packet pickup begin at 7 a.m., with the race scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Registration is $45. The first 450 runners to register will receive an official race T-shirt, while all finishers will earn a commemorative coin marking the event. The 5K route passes many of Cape May’s most notable landmarks, including the Southern Mansion, Emlen Physick Estate, Chalfonte Hotel, Harriet Tubman Museum, AME Church, Franklin Street School, Soldiers and Sailors Park, and stretches of Hughes Street lined with Victorian homes. Portions of the course also travel near Cape May Nature Trails. Organizers hope the event becomes a new annual tradition that highlights Cape May’s historic charm while bringing residents and visitors together through fitness and community engagement.
Historic Preservation Awards Return to Cape May for Special 50th Anniversary Year

Cape May’s Historic Preservation Commission will honor outstanding preservation efforts during its annual Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at The Chalfonte Hotel’s Magnolia Room. The event, scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., is free and open to the public and carries added significance this year as Cape May commemorates the 50th anniversary of its designation as a National Historic Landmark. Hosted in partnership with the City of Cape May, the awards recognize individuals, organizations, and property owners who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to preserving the city’s historic character and architectural heritage. Two major awards will be presented during the evening. The Stewardship Award honors owners of “Contributing” or “Key Contributing” historic properties who have shown long-term commitment to maintaining and preserving the integrity of their buildings. Criteria include preservation of historic materials, sensitive maintenance practices, and contributions to the property’s historical narrative through photographs, publicity, and documentation. The Preservation Leadership Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have strengthened public understanding and appreciation of Cape May’s history through educational programs, tours, publications, and other preservation-focused initiatives. Nominees are evaluated on their impact, engagement with the public, and demonstrated leadership in advancing preservation goals over time.
