World Series of Birding Returns in 2026 With Conservation at Its Core

The World Series of Birding is set to return to Cape May this week, continuing a decades-long tradition that blends competitive birdwatching with conservation fundraising. The event traces its roots back to May 19, 1984, when 13 teams embarked on a 24-hour challenge to identify as many bird species as possible by sight or sound while raising awareness and money for environmental causes. More than four decades later, the event has grown into one of North America’s premier birding competitions and conservation fundraisers. Organizers expect more than 90 teams and participants to take part in the 2026 edition, all competing to log the highest number of bird species while supporting bird and habitat protection efforts. Hosted by New Jersey Audubon, the annual event highlights the importance of preserving critical habitats for migrating birds and encourages birders of all experience levels to participate. While teams compete for recognition and awards, organizers emphasize that the event is centered more on participation and conservation than on winning. Funds raised through the World Series of Birding help support wildlife habitat restoration, migration monitoring, educational programs for children and adults, and advocacy efforts aimed at protecting birds and other wildlife. As preparations begin for the 43rd annual competition, organizers are encouraging supporters to donate and participate in what has become one of New Jersey Audubon’s largest and most impactful fundraising events.
Ocean City, Wildwood, Cape May Lead Race for NJ’s Best Beach

New Jersey beach lovers now have the chance to vote for their favorite stretch of sand as USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice contest highlights the Garden State’s top coastal destinations. The annual competition features 20 nominated beaches across New Jersey’s 130-mile coastline as part of a broader nationwide contest that includes beaches in California, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, and Texas. Voting is open once per day through noon on May 18, with the top 10 beaches set to be revealed on May 27.Several familiar Shore destinations are already emerging as strong contenders based on previous rankings and tourism recognition. Ocean City continues to hold a dominant reputation after being named the Overall Favorite Beach in 2025 by the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium. The family-friendly destination earned the title for the 12th consecutive year and remains one of the state’s most consistently popular beach towns. The Wildwoods are again drawing attention for their expansive free beaches and iconic boardwalk attractions. The area captured the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice title in 2025 and is expected to remain highly competitive in this year’s voting. Cape May also remains a standout thanks to its Victorian charm, walkable streets, boutique shopping, and scenic beaches. The southern Shore destination currently ranks at the top of Tripadvisor’s 2026 list of New Jersey beaches and is widely known for its picturesque sunsets near the Cape May Lighthouse.
After Spirit’s Exit, Breeze Airways Grows Rapidly at ACY

Low-cost carrier, Breeze Airways, will begin daily nonstop flights, from Atlantic City International Airport to Orlando on July 3, with introductory one-way fares starting at $89. The expansion significantly increases Breeze’s footprint at ACY and offers travelers new options following Spirit’s departure, which left many passengers scrambling to adjust travel plans. The airline had already planned to launch service from Atlantic City this year, beginning with nonstop flights to Charleston, South Carolina, starting this week. Additional routes to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, are scheduled to begin June 11, followed by Tampa, Florida, service on July 1. The newly announced destinations include:
Orlando, Florida — Daily nonstop flights beginning July 3, starting at $89 one way
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — Thursday and Sunday nonstop flights beginning Oct. 22, starting at $49 one way
Fort Myers, Florida — Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday nonstop flights beginning Oct. 22, starting at $89 one way
West Palm Beach, Florida — Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday nonstop flights beginning Dec. 17, starting at $89 one way
By the end of the year, Breeze will more than double the number of destinations available from Atlantic City International Airport. The airline has gained national recognition in recent years, earning spots on TIME Magazine’s list of influential companies and Fast Company’s ranking of innovative businesses, while also receiving high marks from travel and airline industry organizations.
