Zoo Wallaby Found After Overnight Escape in Middle Township

A brief overnight escape by a young wallaby from the Cape May County Park and Zoo sparked an early morning search in Middle Township on Tuesday before ending safely just hours later. Zoo officials and local law enforcement launched a coordinated response after discovering that Cletus, a two-year-old male wallaby, had slipped out of his enclosure sometime late Monday night. Residents in the Cape May Court House section of Middle Township were urged to avoid the Sandcastle Drive area while crews searched nearby neighborhoods. Authorities advised the public not to approach the animal if spotted and instead contact police so trained personnel could safely recover him. The search came to a successful conclusion when a local resident reported seeing what appeared to be a small kangaroo-like animal wandering through a yard roughly a half-mile from the zoo. Responding officers and zoo staff safely secured Cletus and returned him to the zoo without injury. County officials said an internal investigation is now underway to determine how the wallaby escaped. Risk management teams are also conducting a broader review of animal enclosure security procedures to help prevent similar incidents in the future. County leaders praised the quick coordination between zoo personnel, the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office, and Middle Township Police, noting that the incident ended without harm to either the public or the animal.
