Cape May Stage Celebrates New Jersey’s Young Writers With Free Play Readings

This is exciting! This evening, Cape May Stage will spotlight the next generation of theatrical talent during a special evening of live readings for the inaugural Young Playwrights Awards, at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Beginning at 6 p.m., the event will feature original 10-minute plays written by New Jersey high school students and brought to life on stage under the direction of Roy Steinberg. The program celebrates emerging voices in theater while giving audiences a chance to experience fresh, imaginative storytelling from young playwrights across the state. This year’s top honors were awarded to Sofia Salinas of Egg Harbor Township High School, Sofia Robles-Torres of Oakcrest High School, and Kayla Friedman of Middletown High School South. Sierra Nelson of South Brunswick High School received an honorable mention for her work. The readings are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted to support Cape May Stage programming and future arts initiatives. The event marks the debut of the Young Playwrights Awards program, designed to encourage creativity and showcase the talents of student writers from across New Jersey.

The event is intended to thank local residents and encourage support for Cape May’s small business community ahead of the summer tourism season. Visitors can enjoy discounts, refreshments, and special offers while strolling through the outdoor mall. Live music by Gordon Vincent will be featured on the 500 block of Washington Street, adding to the festive atmosphere. City officials also announced that paid parking enforcement will be suspended during the event, making it easier for attendees to enjoy the evening without worrying about parking meters.

Cape May Coast Guard Base Set for Massive Upgrade and Expansion

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced a historic $400 million construction contract to modernize and expand Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, the service’s only enlisted recruit training facility. Awarded to Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, the project is the largest shoreside construction investment in Coast Guard history and is designed to significantly increase recruit training capacity over the next several years. Funded through the Working Families Tax Cut Act and federal appropriations, the upgrades will allow TRACEN Cape May to increase annual recruit training capacity from about 5,500 recruits to more than 8,000 by 2030. Planned improvements include new barracks, a large multi-purpose training complex, indoor graduation and drill facilities, a new galley, upgraded parade grounds, expanded utilities, and a state-of-the-art fire station replacing a facility dating back to the 1920s. The announcement also follows the Coast Guard’s recent acquisition of the former Birmingham-Southern College campus in Alabama, part of a broader national effort to expand training infrastructure and accommodate future service growth.
