Cape May County’s Aging Route 50 Bridge Set for Major Overhaul Beginning This Fall

New Jersey officials have announced plans to replace the aging Route 50 bridge over Cedar Swamp Creek in Cape May County using a faster “design-build” construction method that could dramatically shorten the project timeline. The 65-year-old bridge in Upper Township serves as a major evacuation route for residents and tourists traveling to and from the Jersey Shore, particularly during hurricanes and coastal flooding events. State leaders say replacing the structure has become essential as traffic demands and storm risks continue to grow. Under the design-build model, one contract team handles both the design and construction phases simultaneously, eliminating delays common in traditional public works projects. State transportation officials estimate the approach could reduce the overall timeline from as long as seven years to roughly two-and-a-half to three years. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026, with completion targeted for the end of 2028. Officials said the existing bridge will remain open throughout the project, although motorists should expect lane shifts and temporary traffic disruptions once work ramps up. The replacement bridge will be built at a higher elevation to improve flood resilience during severe coastal storms. Plans also include 10-foot shoulders, drainage upgrades, roadway improvements, and a future-use sidewalk.
Cape May County Pushes FAA to Approve Workforce Housing at Airport

Cape May County officials are moving forward with a revised proposal to build workforce housing on a portion of Cape May County Airport property after the Federal Aviation Administration rejected an earlier residential development plan earlier this year. The updated proposal focuses specifically on housing for U.S. Coast Guard personnel, military members, airport workers, and emergency responders tied to national security and public safety operations. County Commissioner Director Leonard Desiderio announced that the county has asked the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which operates the airport, to formally seek FAA approval for a “Change of Land Request.” The new plan would use approximately 18 acres — about 1.8% of the airport’s nearly 1,000-acre property — to construct rental townhomes reserved for essential personnel. The proposal comes as the U.S. Coast Guard prepares for a major expansion at Training Center Cape May. A recently announced federal contract worth up to $400 million will fund new facilities and infrastructure upgrades at the training center, which is expected to increase annual recruit capacity from about 5,500 to more than 8,000 recruits by 2030. County officials say the expansion will significantly increase demand for nearby housing. The airport itself has become a growing center for transportation, business, and tourism activity in Cape May County. In recent years, the facility added a new terminal, expanded business development through the Tech Village complex, and continues to host attractions including Cape May Brewing Company and the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. The latest proposal represents a major shift from the county’s original 2025 plan, which called for several hundred mixed-income housing units on airport land to address broader affordable housing needs in Cape May County. That proposal was denied by the FAA, which cited federal policies prohibiting residential development on airport property.
Ocean City Search for Missing Boogie Boarder Becomes Recovery Mission

The search for a missing boogie boarder off the coast of Ocean City has entered its fourth day and has now transitioned into a recovery mission, authorities confirmed Thursday. Emergency crews continue searching the waters and shoreline near the 10th Street beach, where the 20-year-old Hofstra University student from Exton, Pennsylvania, disappeared Monday evening while boogie boarding with a friend. According to officials, the pair were about 200 yards offshore in rough surf conditions when the student lost his board. Moments later, he was struck by a large wave and did not resurface. His companion was rescued safely by the Ocean City Beach Patrol. The extensive multi-agency operation has involved the Ocean City Police Department, Ocean City Fire Department, Beach Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, Longport Fire Department, and the Cape May County Drone Task Force. Crews have deployed helicopters, drones, personal watercraft, and shoreline teams in an ongoing effort to locate the missing swimmer. Authorities announced Thursday afternoon that rescue operations had officially shifted to recovery efforts after several days of searching failed to locate the student.
