Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock Advances to General Election in NJ-2 Race

Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock secured the Democratic nomination for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday night, positioning himself for a high-profile showdown against Republican incumbent Rep. Jeff Van Drew in November’s general election. Mullock defeated three Democratic challengers in a closely watched primary race that many Democrats see as their strongest opportunity in years to reclaim the South Jersey district. The district spans Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties, along with portions of Gloucester and Ocean counties. The Associated Press projected Mullock as the winner late Tuesday evening, with early returns showing him capturing roughly 41% of the vote while a majority of ballots had been counted. Mullock launched his congressional campaign in early 2026 and quickly gained support from influential South Jersey Democratic figures, including Camden County state Sen. Jim Beach. Political observers viewed the endorsement as a signal of backing from the region’s powerful Democratic organization tied to longtime political leader George Norcross. During his victory celebration, Mullock emphasized his commitment to representing working families across South Jersey and pledged to focus on accessibility, economic concerns and constituent service. The race now shifts to the general election against Van Drew, a four-term congressman who switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 2019 and has remained closely aligned with President Donald Trump. Democrats believe changing political conditions and declining approval numbers for Trump could make the district more competitive this year.

Bay Atlantic Symphony Presents “Song and Dance” Concert Tonight

The Cape May Music Festival keeps on giving with another evening of classical music. Bay Atlantic Symphony will present “Song and Dance”  tonight at 7 p.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, offering audiences an evening of expressive classical masterworks inspired by melody, movement, and romance. The program features Johann Sebastian Bach’s acclaimed violin concerto, highlighted by a deeply lyrical middle movement that pairs the solo violin with the orchestra in a sweeping, emotionally resonant dialogue. The concerto’s opening and closing movements provide a lively contrast, ending with an energetic finale inspired by the rhythmic spirit of a traditional gigue. Audiences will also hear Arthur Foote’s Serenade, a pastoral and richly melodic work that showcases the elegance and warmth of American Romantic-era composition. The piece blends graceful orchestration with flowing, rhapsodic themes. Selections by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky bring soaring melodies and dramatic emotional depth to the performance, including the beloved “Andante cantabile,” celebrated for its lush harmonies and expressive beauty. Completing the evening is Anton Arensky’s variations on a theme by Tchaikovsky, a composition that intertwines lyrical passages with dance-inspired rhythms while honoring the composer who greatly influenced his musical career. Organizers describe the concert as an immersive musical experience designed to transport audiences through a program filled with passion, elegance, and orchestral brilliance.

Cape May Zoo Welcomes Adventurous Young Red Panda

The Cape May County Park and Zoo has introduced a new resident to its popular red panda exhibit. Dr. Stephen Wallace, affectionately known as “Wally,” arrived in May from Zoo Knoxville and is making his public debut as he celebrates his first birthday. Born on June 3, 2025, Wally was one of two male cubs in his litter. His name honors a paleontologist whose discovery of ancient red panda fossils at Tennessee’s Gray Fossil Site helped shed light on the evolutionary history of the species. Those fossils are believed to belong to ancestors of modern red pandas found in Asia today. Zoo staff describe Wally as an inquisitive and energetic young panda who enjoys exploring new enrichment activities, climbing structures, and interacting with his keepers—especially when treats are involved. Visitors can find Wally in the rear red panda habitat, although he has access to indoor areas and may occasionally retreat from public view. The zoo encourages guests to check back later if they do not see him during their visit. Ember, the zoo’s other red panda, remains on exhibit in the front panda yard. The arrival of Wally is part of a coordinated effort through the Red Panda Species Survival Plan, a program designed to support healthy and genetically diverse red panda populations in accredited zoos. Zoo officials expect Wally and Ember to be introduced to one another in the coming months. Meanwhile, Aurora, the zoo’s previous red panda resident, has been relocated to another institution under recommendations from the same program. County officials praised the zoo’s continued growth and its role as one of Cape May County’s leading tourism attractions. The zoo, which welcomed approximately 750,000 visitors last year, was recently recognized by USA Today as one of the nation’s top free attractions. If you haven’t been to the zoo it is a bucket list visit. The Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
