Cape May County Takes Center Stage in Steven Spielberg’s New Sci-Fi Thriller

One of the summer’s most anticipated films is set to arrive in theaters on June 12, and Cape May County has a starring role in its production. Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction thriller "Disclosure Day" marks the acclaimed director’s return to the genre and has already generated significant buzz among critics ahead of its release. Early reviews have praised the film’s performances and storytelling, with the movie earning strong critical marks and being described as a cinematic experience best enjoyed with as few spoilers as possible. The film stars Emily Blunt as a Kansas City television weather forecaster whose life is upended by unexplained neurological events. As she struggles to understand what is happening to her, her path intersects with that of a cybersecurity expert portrayed by Josh O’Connor, who uncovers classified evidence suggesting extraterrestrial contact. Their separate discoveries eventually converge, setting the stage for a mystery with global consequences. While "Disclosure Day" is set in Kansas City, much of the film was shot throughout New Jersey, including several locations in Cape May County. In March 2025, Spielberg and his production team filmed major sequences in Tuckahoe, Woodbine, and Wildwood, bringing hundreds of cast and crew members to the region. The historic Tuckahoe Train Station and nearby Cape May Seashore Lines railroad tracks served as the backdrop for some of the movie’s most dramatic scenes, including a large-scale train and vehicle crash sequence. Woodbine also played a significant role in the production, providing rail facilities, staging areas, and support locations for the crew. Local residents were hired as extras, appearing as train passengers, drivers, and background performers. The production provided a welcome boost to Cape May County during the traditionally slower offseason months. Hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, caterers, and rental properties benefited from the arrival of approximately 150 crew members and support staff.
Cape May Point Arts and Science Center Hosts Summer Stargazing Night

The Cape May Point Arts and Science Center is inviting residents and visitors to spend an evening exploring the night sky during its ongoing Courtyard Stargazing Night series beginning tonight. The program will feature astrophysicist and Atlantic Cape Community College professor Dr. Frank Toriello, who will lead guests on a journey through the stars, planets, and the broader universe. The evening begins with an educational presentation inside the Center’s Science Exhibit Hall before moving outdoors for guided stargazing in the courtyard. Attendees will have access to telescopes and telescopic binoculars as they observe celestial objects under what are expected to be especially dark skies due to the approaching new moon. The timing should provide excellent viewing conditions, with constellations including Bootes, Virgo, Leo, and Cassiopeia expected to be visible. Jupiter and Venus may also be spotted low on the horizon. Doors open at 8 p.m., with the presentation beginning at 8:30 p.m. Organizers encourage guests to arrive early to secure seating. Visitors are welcome to bring their own telescopes or binoculars, along with beach chairs, blankets, and insect repellent for added comfort during the outdoor portion of the event. Proceeds and donations from the stargazing series help support the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center’s educational programs and community outreach efforts throughout the region. Additional Courtyard Stargazing Nights are scheduled for June 26, July 10, July 24, August 12, August 28, and October 9.
Missing Wildwood Swimmer Found in Cape May After Extensive Search

Authorities have confirmed the recovery of 14-year-old Davoris “Peter” Carter III, the Philadelphia student who disappeared while swimming in the ocean off Wildwood earlier this month. According to the Wildwood Police Department, Carter’s body was discovered Tuesday near the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. A forensic examination later confirmed his identity. Carter vanished on June 1 while visiting the Jersey Shore on a school trip with the Delta School, a Philadelphia-based private school serving students with special needs. He entered the water near Schellenger Avenue alongside three other students during the early afternoon hours. In a statement, Wildwood police expressed condolences to Carter’s family and friends while thanking the many first responders who participated in both the rescue and recovery efforts. The tragedy has renewed attention on beach safety as summer begins along the Jersey Shore. Officials continue to remind beachgoers to swim only when lifeguards are on duty and to exercise caution in changing ocean conditions.
