New Jersey Homelessness Advocates Seek $40 Million Funding Increase Before Budget Deadline

The impact of Family Promise of Cape May County can be seen every day through its work helping individuals and families facing housing instability. Now, Executive Director Yvonne Sullivan is encouraging residents to support a statewide effort aimed at strengthening New Jersey’s response to homelessness. The New Jersey Coalition to End Homelessness has launched a statewide advocacy campaign urging lawmakers to approve an additional $40 million in funding for the state’s homeless response system before the current budget cycle concludes. Supporters are calling on Governor Mikie Sherrill and members of the Legislature to pass Senate Resolution 432 and Assembly Resolution 7, measures aimed at strengthening resources for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Advocates warn that homelessness has risen sharply across New Jersey in recent years, increasing pressure on shelters and service providers. Without additional funding, organizations fear a growing number of residents could face housing instability, while emergency shelters may struggle to meet demand. The proposed funding would help sustain emergency shelter operations, support eviction prevention efforts, expand supportive housing programs, and provide assistance to vulnerable groups, including military veterans. Organizations backing the proposal argue that early investments in housing and homelessness prevention deliver significant long-term savings. They point to the higher public costs associated with repeated use of emergency medical services, institutional care, and involvement in the criminal justice system when housing needs go unmet. Residents who wish to support the effort are encouraged to participate in a letter-writing campaign through Action Network. The online form allows users to send a message to their local legislators and the Governor’s office in just a few minutes.

Explore Cape May’s Coastline During Weekly Beachcombing the Cove Walks

Visitors looking to discover the natural wonders of Cape May’s coastline can take part in Beachcombing the Cove, a guided outdoor program hosted by the Nature Center of Cape May and New Jersey Audubon. Held every Wednesday throughout the summer, the family-friendly program invites participants to explore the diverse coastal habitats found at Cape May’s renowned Cove Beach. Guided by experienced naturalists, guests will search the shoreline, shallow waters, and dune areas for shells, marine life, and other natural treasures left behind by the tides. The educational walk highlights the unique ecology of the beach, ocean, and dune environments while teaching participants how to identify native shells and recognize signs of local wildlife. As coastal conditions continually change, each outing offers a different opportunity to observe the natural features and species that make the area one of New Jersey’s most significant shorebird and marine habitats. The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. every Wednesday from June through August. Participants meet at the flagpole near the Sunset Pavilion at the end of the Promenade by Cove Beach, located at 62 Beach Avenue in Cape May. Advance registration is required.

Ocean City Leaders Eye Smaller Mixed-Use Hotel as Path Forward for Wonderland Site

A City Council-appointed Boardwalk Subcommittee has concluded that a large-scale hotel at the former Wonderland Pier property is unlikely to gain support in its current form, recommending instead a smaller, mixed-use development that balances economic growth with neighborhood concerns. The recommendations are part of a broader strategy that views the Boardwalk as a unified destination rather than a collection of individual properties. The report argues that future development should focus on maintaining the Boardwalk’s identity while adapting to modern tourism trends. The findings will now be reviewed by City Council, Ocean City’s planning professionals and the Planning Board as officials consider a long-term vision for the Boardwalk’s future. The Wonderland property has remained a focal point of public debate since the amusement park closed in October 2024 after nearly six decades of operation. Since then, residents, business owners and community groups have been divided over whether the site should remain focused on entertainment uses or evolve into a mixed-use destination that includes lodging and commercial activity. While no final decision has been made, the subcommittee’s report provides the clearest indication yet that Ocean City leaders may favor a compromise approach—one that includes a smaller hotel while preserving the Boardwalk’s family-oriented character and economic vitality.
