Summer Solstice Brings Longest Day of 2026 and Official Start of Summer in Cape May

Summer officially arrived today, June 21, as the Northern Hemisphere celebrates the summer solstice — the longest day and shortest night of the year. According to NASA, the solstice occurs at 4:24 a.m. Eastern Time, when the Northern Hemisphere reaches its maximum tilt toward the sun. As a result, much of the United States will enjoy nearly 15 hours of daylight, with approximately 14 hours and 57 minutes between sunrise and sunset. The annual event marks the beginning of astronomical summer so the question is, what are you going to so with you’re almost 15 hours of sunlight today? With Father’s Day falling on the same day, Cape May visitors and residents have no shortage of ways to make the most of the extra sunshine. Sunny weather is expected throughout the day, the beach is an obvious choice. But beyond the sand and surf, Cape May offers a full slate of attractions and events to help celebrate the longest day of 2026. The Cape May MAC calendar features a variety of tours and exhibits throughout the day, providing opportunities to explore the city’s rich history and Victorian architecture. Theater lovers can catch performances as both Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theater Company have recently launched their summer seasons. Live music is also plentiful, with performances scheduled at venues including Willow Creek Winery, The Mad Batter and Rotary Park. Families looking for daytime adventures can head to the Cape May County Park & Zoo or climb the Cape May Lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline. Historic Cold Spring Village is a fun stop and shoppers have the Washington Street Mall, the list goes on. Classical music enthusiasts have one last chance to enjoy the annual Cape May Music Festival, which concludes its run today. As the sun begins to set on the longest day of the year, many will make their way to Sunset Beach. The spot, consistently ranked among the nation’s best places to watch the sunset, offers a spectacular view of the sun sinking into Delaware Bay with the remains of the SS Atlantus — the concrete ship that ran aground offshore in 1926 — providing a uniquely Cape May backdrop. Have a happy Father’s Day, get out and enjoy the solstice.
Cape May Point Arts and Science Center Hosts Vintage Photography Pop-Up

The Cape May Point Arts and Science Center will welcome acclaimed photographer and 2024 Guggenheim Fellow Lisa Elmaleh for a special Tintype Photography Pop-up Event on Saturday, June 27, offering visitors the chance to sit for portraits created using one of photography’s oldest techniques. Running from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the event will showcase the 19th-century wet plate collodion process, a painstaking method that produces one-of-a-kind images on black metal plates using raw chemistry, silver and natural light. Each portrait is crafted entirely by hand while the subject watches, providing an immersive look at a process that predates modern film and digital photography. Elmaleh is widely recognized for her work with historic photographic techniques and large-format imagery. Her photographs have appeared in publications including The New York Times, National Geographic and Smithsonian Magazine. She also created the cover image for Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Tyler Childers’ 2020 album Long Violent History. Participants in the Cape May Point event will sit for approximately 45 minutes and witness the complete process, from plate preparation and exposure to chemical development. Subjects are asked to remain still for roughly 10 seconds during the exposure. The resulting images are known for their remarkable detail, texture and imperfections, ensuring that no two portraits are identical. Each participant will receive an original tintype portrait along with a high-resolution digital scan. Finished plates will be available for pickup beginning Monday, June 29.
Man’s Body Found in Intracoastal Waterway Near Sea Isle City

Authorities are investigating after a man's body was recovered Friday morning from the Intracoastal Waterway off Sea Isle City. Emergency responders were called shortly after 9:20 a.m. after reports of a body floating near 88th Street. The remains were ultimately located farther out in the channel near 72nd Street at the south end of the island. The New Jersey State Police Marine Unit used a boat to retrieve the body and transferred the remains to the Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Officials have identified the deceased only as a male. No information has been released regarding his identity, how long he may have been in the water, or the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities have also not indicated whether foul play is suspected. The investigation is being conducted by the New Jersey State Police, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the medical examiner. The recovery marks the third incident in the past month involving bodies recovered from or searches conducted in Cape May County waters. Earlier this month, the body of a 14-year-old Philadelphia student who disappeared while swimming during a school trip in Wildwood was found near Cape May. Authorities are also continuing efforts related to a 20-year-old Hofstra University student who vanished after being swept from a boogie board in Ocean City in May.
