Independence Day Festivities Return to Cape May With Full Holiday Weekend Lineup

 Cape May will mark the nation’s 250th birthday with a full day of patriotic festivities on Saturday, July 4, highlighted by the city’s annual Independence Day Parade and an evening fireworks display over the ocean. One of the resort’s most cherished summer traditions, the parade will step off at 1 p.m. on Philadelphia Avenue and proceed along Beach Avenue to Lifeguard Headquarters. Decorated vehicles, community organizations, veterans groups, first responders, local officials, marching units and patriotic displays will take part in the celebration honoring the country’s semiquincentennial. City officials say the milestone makes this year’s event especially significant, noting Cape May’s longstanding ties to American history and its tradition of bringing residents and visitors together to celebrate the nation’s heritage. Spectators are encouraged to line the parade route dressed in red, white and blue and enjoy an afternoon of patriotic music and community spirit. Festivities will continue at approximately 9:30 p.m. with the annual Independence Day fireworks display. Sponsored by the City of Cape May, Congress Hall and Cape May County, the fireworks will be launched from a barge positioned offshore in front of Congress Hall. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date is scheduled for Monday, July 6, with updates to be announced on social media. Large crowds are expected throughout the holiday, and visitors are advised to arrive early. Road closures and parking restrictions will be in place along the parade route and surrounding areas. The celebration also includes four evenings of free concerts in Rotary Park, located at 400 Lafayette Street. Performances begin at 7 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs as seating is limited.

Cape May County Zoo Celebrates Top Five Ranking in USA Today 10Best Awards

The Cape May County Park & Zoo has been recognized as the fifth-best free attraction in the United States in the 2026 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, according to Cape May County officials. The national recognition highlights the zoo’s free admission and parking, extensive collection of wildlife, educational programs and family-friendly atmosphere. Situated on 85 acres within Cape May County Park, the zoo is home to more than 550 animals representing approximately 250 species. Visitors can see giraffes, zebras, leopards, lemurs and many other animals while also enjoying playgrounds, picnic areas, walking trails and seasonal events throughout the year. County officials said the award reflects the zoo’s reputation as one of the region’s top attractions and encouraged residents and visitors to take advantage of the free destination during the summer season. The Cape May County Park & Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. throughout the year, except on Christmas Day. While admission and parking are free, visitors may make voluntary donations to help support animal care and future improvements to the facility.

Split 5-2 Vote Moves Wonderland Pier Property Toward Redevelopment

 Ocean City Council voted 5-2 to designate the former Wonderland Pier property as an area in need of rehabilitation, allowing redevelopment planning to move forward. While the vote does not approve developer Eustace Mita's proposed 252-room hotel, it enables the city to negotiate a redevelopment plan. Supporters say the action is necessary to revive the struggling north end of the Boardwalk, while opponents argue the decision was rushed and could lead to an oversized project that changes the character of Ocean City.
