America 250 Comes Alive Across the Jersey Shore

Cape May County is marking America’s 250th anniversary with a packed summer calendar of events celebrating the nation’s history alongside the traditions that make the Jersey Shore a favorite destination. Visitors planning a weekend getaway or an extended vacation can enjoy Revolutionary War history, patriotic concerts, family-friendly festivals, drone light shows, and classic shore experiences throughout the season. The celebration began with a reenactment of the Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet in Wildwood Crest. Held at Sunset Lake, the event commemorates the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Cape May County with two free performances on the shoreline and water. Ocean City continues the festivities with free patriotic concerts by the Ocean City Pops on July 2 and July 4, followed by drone light shows over the beach and Boardwalk. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy the evening performances. Historic Cold Spring Village in Cape May will host its Semiquincentennial Fourth of July Celebration on July 4 and 5, featuring special historical programming, demonstrations, and activities designed for the whole family. Wildwood’s beaches will light up the night on July 5 with a large-scale patriotic drone show featuring hundreds of synchronized drones performing animated displays set to music. More details tomorrow! Throughout July, Ocean City will also present its weekly “America 250: Lights Over Ocean City” series every Sunday evening. The recurring drone shows will illuminate the beachfront sky with patriotic displays, giving visitors multiple opportunities to experience the celebration. Rare Parade of Tall Ships Set to Pass Between Lewes and Cape May

Residents and visitors along the Delaware Bay will have a rare opportunity to watch a fleet of international military vessels and historic tall ships pass between Lewes, Delaware, and Cape May, New Jersey, as they head toward New York Harbor for the Sail4th 250 celebration over the Independence Day weekend. The vessels recently participated in Sail250 events in Baltimore and are now traveling north to take part in festivities marking America's 250th anniversary. Because of differences in vessel size, the fleet is following two separate routes. A small group of military and support vessels is using the 14-mile Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, a man-made waterway that provides a shortcut of roughly 300 miles by connecting the Chesapeake Bay with the Delaware River. After transiting the canal, these ships will travel down the Delaware River and into the Delaware Bay before continuing north. Only a handful of the international fleet is small enough to pass beneath the canal's bridges. Among them is Canada's HMCS William Hall, an Arctic and offshore patrol vessel that is expected to be visible in local waters. One of the most notable vessels making the voyage is Poland's Dar Młodzieży, a 354-foot, three-masted full-rigged sailing ship with approximately 32,000 square feet of sail. As of June 30, the vessel was reported to be about 17 nautical miles off the coast of Fenwick Island as it approached the Delaware Bay. Adding to the maritime activity, New Jersey's official tall ship, the historic 1928 oyster schooner A.J. Meerwald, has returned to its seasonal home at the Cape May Ferry Terminal. Although it is not part of the international fleet traveling from Baltimore, the schooner is offering daytime and sunset public sailing excursions throughout the week. Those hoping to catch a glimpse of the visiting ships can also follow their progress using online vessel-tracking services as they make their way toward New York for one of the nation's largest maritime celebrations.
