Cape May Announces Full Lineup for 2026 Independence Day Celebration

Cape May is preparing for a full weekend of patriotic festivities as the city celebrates Independence Day and America’s 250th birthday with a lineup of free family-friendly events, highlighted by the annual Independence Day Parade on Saturday, July 4. The parade steps off at 1 p.m., beginning at Philadelphia Avenue and traveling west along Beach Avenue before concluding near the Cape May Beach Patrol headquarters. The long-running tradition pays tribute to the nation’s veterans while showcasing string bands, community organizations, classic automobiles, performing groups, family entries, veteran organizations, and local officials. A new attraction this year is the "Best Decorated" contest, inviting participants to creatively decorate golf carts, bicycles, and baby carriages in patriotic red, white, and blue. First-, second-, and third-place winners will be announced immediately after the parade in front of Cape May Convention Hall. Organizers expect heavy pedestrian traffic and road congestion along Beach Avenue between noon and 2:30 p.m. Metered parking on Beach Avenue will be restricted during the event, and visitors are encouraged to park several blocks inland and arrive early to secure a viewing location. The Independence Day celebration continues well into the evening with Cape May’s annual Fireworks Extravaganza, scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. as fireworks are launched from an offshore barge. The festivities begin on Friday, July 3, with free Music in the Park featuring the Tom Powdermaker Duo at 7 p.m. Entertainment continues throughout the holiday weekend with Nolan Quinn & The Troublemakers performing on Saturday evening, Quarantined Quartet on Sunday, and the Geno White Trio on Monday, all beginning at 7 p.m. If weather forces a postponement, the parade will be held on Monday, July 6.

Celebrate America's 250th at Historic Cold Spring Village This Fourth of July Weekend

Historic Cold Spring Village will commemorate America's 250th birthday with its annual Semiquincentennial Fourth of July Celebration on Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, 2026, offering visitors two days of patriotic activities, living history, and family-friendly entertainment. The celebration takes place throughout the Village's 30-acre open-air living history museum, where visitors can explore restored historic buildings and watch demonstrations of traditional Early American trades, including blacksmithing, woodworking, printing, bookbinding, and basket weaving. Each day begins with a Militia Muster at 11:30 a.m. at the Dennisville Inn, where children ages 5 to 12 can participate in a hands-on colonial-era militia drill. At 12:30 p.m., costumed interpreters will present a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, inviting guests to join in the patriotic celebration. Saturday's festivities include a performance by the John Walter Cape Community Band at 2 p.m., featuring classic American heritage music. On Sunday, visitors can attend a special History of the American Flag presentation at the Village Gazebo from 2 to 3 p.m., exploring the evolution and symbolism of the nation's flag. Children can also take part in the Patriot Spy Game, searching for clues hidden throughout the Village using an authentic Revolutionary War cipher while learning about colonial history in an engaging, hands-on way. Historic Cold Spring Village will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, providing families with an opportunity to celebrate Independence Day while experiencing one of New Jersey's premier living history museums during the nation's semiquincentennial year.

Historic AJ Meerwald Welcomes Visitors Through July 29

Visitors have the opportunity to step aboard the AJ Meerwald, New Jersey's official Tall Ship, during a special public appearance running from June 26 through July 29, 2026, with visiting hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The schooner will be sailing out of the Cape May Ferry Terminal. Homeported in Bivalve, New Jersey, the AJ Meerwald is a fully restored Delaware Bay oyster dredging schooner that now serves as a floating classroom and ambassador for the region's rich maritime heritage. Operated by the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, the vessel offers educational programs, public sails, and charters throughout the Delaware Bay, Delaware River, and along the Atlantic Coast. Launched on September 7, 1928, the AJ Meerwald was built by Charles H. Stowman & Sons in Dorchester, New Jersey, during the final years of South Jersey's thriving wooden shipbuilding industry. Designed specifically for oyster dredging, the schooner featured an oak-on-oak hull, shallow draft, wide beam, and traditional two-masted gaff rig that allowed it to efficiently navigate the waters of the Delaware Bay. The vessel played several roles throughout its nearly century-long history. During World War II, it was commandeered by the U.S. government under the War Powers Act and converted into a Coast Guard fireboat. After the war, it returned to commercial service, first harvesting oysters and later surf clams under the name Clyde A. Phillips. In 1998, the State of New Jersey officially designated the AJ Meerwald as the state's Tall Ship, recognizing its role in preserving the maritime traditions of the Delaware Bay and educating future generations. Today, the 115-foot schooner continues to sail with a mission of education and preservation. The vessel accommodates up to 49 passengers and features more than 3,500 square feet of sail. Through hands-on experiences and public programs, the AJ Meerwald connects visitors with the history of South Jersey's oyster industry, traditional wooden shipbuilding, and the region's coastal waterways. The AJ Meerwald remains one of only a handful of surviving Delaware Bay oyster schooners, offering a rare opportunity to experience a living piece of New Jersey's maritime history.
