Neil Simon Comedy London Suite Takes the Stage at Gateway Playhouse

Gateway Playhouse in Somers Point will present Neil Simon's classic comedy London Suite on July 11 and 12 as part of its Community Spotlight Series, offering audiences an affordable opportunity to enjoy one of the playwright's most celebrated works. The production features four interconnected one-act plays, each taking place in the same London hotel suite. Every story follows a different group of guests as they navigate humorous situations involving romance, family conflicts, misunderstandings and unexpected reunions. Directed by Ryan Daly, with Janelle Hawkes serving as assistant director, the production continues the Gateway's Community Spotlight Series, which features smaller-scale plays designed to complement the theater's first all-musical MainStage season while keeping ticket prices accessible. This marks Daly's first time directing a Neil Simon play after previously leading Gateway productions of The Man Who Came to Dinner and Much Ado About Nothing. Simon, one of America's most acclaimed playwrights, is also known for classics including The Odd Couple, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Sunshine Boys, Plaza Suite and California Suite. The four stories featured in London Suite include:
Settling Accounts: A Welsh author confronts his longtime business manager over missing money.
Going Home: An American woman encourages her widowed mother to spend an evening with a wealthy Scotsman while vacationing abroad.
The Man on the Floor: A New York couple risks losing its hotel suite after misplacing Wimbledon tickets just as actor Kevin Costner is scheduled to check in.
Diana and Sidney: Two characters from California Suite reunite years after their divorce, revealing unresolved emotions and new relationships.
The cast includes returning Gateway performers Joe Chialastri, Andrew Czekalski and Victoria Biron, alongside newcomers Jacob Van Tine, Ginger Liberatore and Maria Black. To accommodate the large ensemble, the production also introduces additional hotel staff characters that help connect the scenes and streamline transitions between acts. Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12, with a 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday, July 12. Tickets are $15 for all Community Spotlight performances and are available at GatewayByTheBay.org or through the Karen S. Sutherland Box Office, open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Gateway Playhouse is located at 738 Bay Ave. in Somers Point. Dangerous Holiday Heat Wave Grips Cape May County; Fireworks Still Planned

An Extreme Heat Warning and Heat Advisory remain in effect across Cape May County as an intense holiday weekend heat wave pushes temperatures into the low 100s and drives heat index values as high as 115 degrees. Because of the dangerous conditions, Cape May City has canceled its annual July 4 Independence Day Parade. The city's evening fireworks display, however, is still expected to take place as scheduled. The National Weather Service's Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday. Actual afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s to low 100s on Friday and Saturday. Cape May Court House has already recorded a temperature of 104 degrees with a heat index of 111 degrees. Relief from the heat will be limited overnight, with temperatures only falling into the mid-70s to around 80 degrees, providing little opportunity for homes and buildings to cool. Despite the extreme air temperatures, ocean water remains much cooler, ranging from 70 to 74 degrees due to an upwelling event. The cooler water offers a sharp contrast to the dangerously hot beach conditions. Forecasters expect the heat to gradually ease by Sunday and Monday, with daytime temperatures returning to the 70s and 80s. Late-day thunderstorms remain possible throughout the holiday weekend. Officials are urging residents and visitors to avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.

Answer to the July 3rd Trivia Question
What was the primary reason for constructing the Cape May Canal during World War II?
A) To create a shortcut for commercial shipping between New York and Philadelphia
B) To provide a protected route for maritime traffic to avoid German U-boat attacks
C) To facilitate the expansion of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry service
D) To connect inland waterways for recreational boating purposes
Answer: B) To provide a protected route for maritime traffic to avoid German U-boat attacks
The Cape May Canal was constructed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1942 during World War II. Its primary purpose was to offer a secure passage for ships, allowing them to bypass the treacherous waters near Cape May Point where German U-boats were known to operate. This canal became a crucial link in the Intracoastal Waterway, enhancing the safety of coastal shipping during the war.
