Wildwood Police Prevent Fourth of July Boardwalk Takeover, Charge Pennsylvania Teen

Wildwood police say they prevented a planned Fourth of July "takeover" event on the city's boardwalk and charged a 19-year-old Pennsylvania man with promoting the gathering through social media. According to the Wildwood Police Department, New Jersey Transit Police alerted investigators on July 4 to online posts advertising an unsanctioned event targeting the boardwalk. Detectives, working alongside the New Jersey State Police Regional Operations Intelligence Center, spent several hours attempting to identify the organizer and have the posts removed, but were unsuccessful before the event was set to begin. Rather than wait for crowds to gather, law enforcement increased its presence throughout the boardwalk, deploying officers to areas expected to attract participants. As a precaution, several boardwalk businesses also removed outdoor merchandise and equipment to reduce the risk of damage. Throughout the afternoon and evening, officers monitored the boardwalk, dispersed small groups, and continued investigating the online promotion. Detectives eventually obtained a photograph of the suspected organizer and distributed it to officers assigned to patrol the area. At approximately 6:08 p.m. in the 2600 block of the boardwalk, members of the department's bicycle patrol located a man matching the description. Police identified him as Stephen Kerrin, 19, of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Kerrin was charged with disturbance at a public gathering under New Jersey law. He was processed on a summons complaint and released in accordance with New Jersey's bail reform procedures. The charge is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Police officials credited the operation to close coordination among the Wildwood Police Department, NJ Transit Police, the New Jersey State Police, the Cape May County Sheriff's Department, and the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office. The department said the successful operation demonstrates how cooperation between multiple law enforcement agencies, combined with information shared by the public, can prevent disruptive gatherings before they escalate. Officials also reiterated that they intend to continue identifying and prosecuting those responsible for organizing unlawful events targeting the city.
