RevolutionNJ Traveling Exhibit Brings New Jersey's Revolutionary History to Cape May

The City of Cape May is hosting the RevolutionNJ traveling exhibit, Revolutionary Lives: Living the American Experiment Then and Now, through July 24 at the Cape May Community Center. The free exhibit explores the lives of ordinary New Jersey residents whose work, sacrifices, and decisions helped shape the American Revolution. Through 12 portable display panels, visitors can learn how the experiences of everyday people continue to influence civic engagement and democracy today. The exhibit focuses on New Jersey's unique role during the Revolutionary War, when the state became one of the nation's primary battlegrounds. With communities divided among Patriots, Loyalists, and those attempting to remain neutral, New Jersey experienced intense conflict, widespread destruction, and some of the war's fiercest fighting. Featured stories include those of Black patriot Oliver Cromwell; Colonel Tye and Samuel Sutphen, two enslaved men who made different choices during the conflict; Ann Cooper Whithall, a civilian caught between opposing forces; and Shawuskukhkung, a member of the independent Lenape Nation. Together, their stories offer a broader perspective on the Revolution beyond its most familiar historical figures. The exhibit is part of RevolutionNJ, New Jersey's official America250 initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Established through state legislation in 2018, RevolutionNJ is a partnership between the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the New Jersey Department of State, and Crossroads of the American Revolution Association. The exhibit is open to visitors of all ages and is available at no cost. It is on display at the Cape May Community Center, 110 Ocean Street, Cape May. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is closed on Sundays.
Historian John W. Franklin Headlines Post-Show Discussion at East Lynne Theater

East Lynne Theater Company welcomed noted African American historian John W. Franklin on July 8 for a special post-performance discussion following a presentation of Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years at the Clemans Theater for the Arts. The talkback gave audience members an opportunity to explore the historical significance of the play and the lives of sisters Sarah “Sadie” Delany and Annie Elizabeth “Bessie” Delany, whose story spans more than a century of American history. Adapted from the bestselling memoir by Sarah L. Delany and A. Elizabeth Delany with Amy Hill Hearth, the production highlights the sisters’ achievements, resilience, and lifelong commitment to education and social progress. Franklin, a nationally recognized public historian, has held leadership positions at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, helping develop exhibitions that examine the breadth of the American experience. He is also the son of Pulitzer Prize-winning historian John Hope Franklin, author of the landmark work From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans. During the discussion, Franklin examined the Delany sisters’ place in 20th-century African American history and reflected on how their experiences continue to resonate through conversations about race, family, education, and equality. Audience members also participated in a question-and-answer session following the presentation. The evening also featured the unveiling of an original mixed-media artwork by Cape May artist Sydnei SmithJordan. The piece portrays the Delany sisters through layered portraiture, stitched fabrics, linen, text, and other textured materials, celebrating their enduring legacy. The artwork will remain on display and available for purchase at the Clemans Theater through July 19, with proceeds benefiting East Lynne Theater Company. East Lynne Executive Director Mark David Boberick said the combination of the production and Franklin’s historical perspective offered audiences a deeper appreciation for the Delany sisters’ lasting impact on American history. Having Our Say continues through July 19, with performances at 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sundays at the Clemans Theater for the Arts, 717 Franklin St. in Cape May. Tickets are $40 for general admission, $35 for seniors, and $25 for students and military members. More information is available at EastLynneTheater.org.
Ocean City's Night in Venice Welcomes Randy Quaid for Christmas in July Celebration

Actor Randy Quaid will serve as the grand marshal for the 2026 Night in Venice celebration on Saturday, July 25, bringing a Hollywood touch to Ocean City's annual summer tradition. Best known for his role as Cousin Eddie in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Quaid will help lead this year's celebration, which carries the theme "Stars, Stripes & Christmas Lights." The theme combines America's 250th anniversary with the festive spirit of Christmas in July. Before the evening boat parade, Quaid will appear at a special screening of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation at noon at the Ocean City Tabernacle. Following the film, attendees can participate in a live question-and-answer session covering his acting career and behind-the-scenes stories from the holiday classic. VIP tickets are also available and include a commemorative digital photo with Quaid and an autographed movie poster. Fans are encouraged to dress as their favorite Cousin Eddie-inspired character. Now in its 71st year, Night in Venice is one of the nation's largest boat parades, featuring elaborately decorated boats, themed bayfront homes, live entertainment, and a fireworks display over the bay. This year's patriotic and holiday-inspired theme is expected to draw thousands of spectators along the parade route and at private waterfront gatherings. Organizers are accepting entries for both the decorated boat parade and the bayfront home decorating contest. Participation is open to the public, and while the annual theme is encouraged, it is not required. Registration is available online at ocnj.us/niv or by calling 609-399-6111. Tickets for the movie screening, live Q&A, and VIP meet-and-greet are available through the Ocean City box office at oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice. The 2026 Night in Venice celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 25. Presenting sponsors include ACME and OCNJ Watersports, while the movie screening is sponsored by the Stainton's Family of Stores.
