Historic Cold Spring Village Brings Back the Magic of an 1800s Carnival

Historic Cold Spring Village invites families to experience the sights, sounds, and simple pleasures of an 1800s-style carnival during its annual Yesteryear Carnival, July 17–19. The three-day event recreates the charm of a bygone era with old-fashioned games, traditional crafts, live entertainment, historic demonstrations, and activities designed for all ages. Visitors can enjoy performances by a magician and balloon artist, face painting, interactive story displays, music, and classic carnival fun inspired by the late 19th century. Unlike modern amusement parks, carnivals of the 1800s relied on games of skill, handmade attractions, and community gatherings. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the spirit of those early celebrations while exploring Historic Cold Spring Village's preserved 19th-century buildings and grounds. The event offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and discover how families entertained themselves before electricity-powered rides became commonplace. From traditional games to living history demonstrations, Yesteryear Carnival combines education with family-friendly entertainment in one of Cape May County's most distinctive historic settings. Historic Cold Spring Village is also seeking vendors to participate in this year's event. Businesses, artisans, food vendors, and exhibitors are invited to showcase their products and services during the three-day celebration, which attracts visitors from throughout South Jersey and beyond. Yesteryear Carnival will be held July 17–19 at Historic Cold Spring Village, 735 Seashore Road, Cape May. Businesses interested in becoming vendors can contact the Village at [email protected]. Additional information about the event is available at hcsv.org/events.php.
Holiday Crowds Give Wildwood Economy a Major Mid-Summer Boost

It is encouraging news for the local economy. Businesses throughout the Wildwoods are reporting a significant increase in customer activity following a busy Fourth of July holiday week, offering a welcome turnaround after a slower-than-expected start to the summer tourism season. Boardwalk retailers said the holiday crowds brought a noticeable surge in sales, easing earlier concerns about the impact of higher travel costs and cautious consumer spending. As visitor numbers climbed during the peak summer period, many shops experienced heavy foot traffic and increased demand for beach gear and seasonal merchandise, with favorable weather also contributing to stronger business. Restaurants across the area also benefited from the holiday. Local operators said the timing of Independence Day on a weekend encouraged larger crowds and longer visits, resulting in some of the strongest weekly sales of the season. One restaurant reported sales increasing by 55% compared with the same period last year. The positive trend aligns with broader tourism data showing year-over-year increases in visitor spending across several Jersey Shore counties. Spending rose 2.6% in Ocean County, 2.5% in Atlantic County, and 4.2% in Cape May County. Hotels and resorts also experienced strong demand. Resort officials said July is already shaping up to be the property's strongest on record. In addition to favorable weather and holiday travel, a full schedule of local events helped attract and retain visitors. Activities such as a beach run, farmers market, beachfront drone show, and the traditional boardwalk fireworks encouraged extended stays throughout the holiday period.
New Jersey Officially Names Open-Water Lifeguards as First Responder

New Jersey has officially designated approximately 3,000 open-water lifeguards as first responders through Senate Resolution 72. The recognition acknowledges their emergency response training, lifesaving responsibilities and eligibility for certain state responder benefits while honoring two lifeguards who died in the line of duty in 2021. Across communities including Ocean City, Atlantic City, Margate, Ventnor, Brigantine, Longport, Wildwood and Cape May, lifeguards remain a vital part of public safety. Their duties begin long before beaches fill with visitors each day, with rigorous physical testing, extensive training and continuous monitoring of changing surf conditions. Supporters also hope the designation will strengthen recruitment for beach patrols across the Jersey Shore.
