Congress Hall Seeks No. 1 Spot in National Historic Hotel Competition

Congress Hall, the historic landmark that has welcomed guests to Cape May since 1816, has been named one of USA TODAY's 20 Best Historic Hotels & Resorts in America for 2026.

The recognition places the iconic Cape May resort among the nation's premier historic destinations and highlights its more than two centuries of hospitality along New Jersey's southern shoreline.

Known as America's oldest seaside resort, Congress Hall has hosted four U.S. presidents during its long history, including President Benjamin Harrison, who used the property as his summer residence during his administration. Today, the resort combines its historic architecture with modern amenities, including oceanfront accommodations, a private beach, Sea Spa, multiple dining venues, and year-round events.

Located in the heart of Cape May's National Historic Landmark District, the hotel offers visitors easy access to the city's Victorian architecture, shopping, restaurants, and beaches, making it one of the region's most recognizable destinations.

Congress Hall is now competing in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards for the title of America's Best Historic Hotel. Public voting is open through Aug. 3, with participants allowed to vote once each day. Final rankings will be announced on Aug. 12.

The annual competition begins with nominations from a panel of travel experts before readers vote to determine the final Top 10 rankings. The Historic Hotel Bethlehem in Pennsylvania has claimed the top spot for the past five consecutive years.

Captain Kidd Treasure Hunt Returns to Cape May for 62nd Year of Pirate Fun

 Young adventurers will have a chance to hunt for buried treasure this summer as the 62nd Annual Captain Kidd Treasure Hunt returns to Cape May on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

The longtime Cape May tradition will begin at 1 p.m. at the Cape May Beach Patrol Headquarters, located at 238 Beach Avenue at the corner of Beach Avenue and Grant Street. Designed for children ages 3 to 10, the family-friendly event is free and open to the public.

The afternoon kicks off on the promenade, where costumed pirate characters Captain Kidd and Captain Mey welcome participants and distribute toy pirate swords. After a lively pirate-themed presentation, children will be led to a hidden treasure area on the beach.

Once there, young treasure hunters can dig through the sand in search of treasure chests filled with small prizes, keepsakes, and pirate-themed goodies. The event has become one of Cape May’s most enduring summer attractions, drawing generations of families for an afternoon of seaside fun and imagination.

Organizers expect another strong turnout for the annual celebration, which combines beachside adventure, community tradition, and classic pirate excitement for Cape May’s youngest visitors.

Cape May’s Jawbone Gallery Debuts First Female Solo Exhibition

Jawbone Gallery in Cape May is welcoming visitors to its newest exhibition, "Veils of Water and Sky," a solo showcase featuring the work of acclaimed tonalist painter Megan Whitfield. The exhibition marks an important milestone for the gallery as its first solo exhibition dedicated to a female artist, it runs through July 27. Admission is free, with the gallery open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors planning to attend before the exhibition closes will also have the opportunity to meet the artist during a special Meet and Greet on Thursday, July 23, where Whitfield will discuss her creative process, artistic influences, and the inspiration behind the collection.
