‘Funny Girls’ Come to Life on Cape May’s Washington Street Mall Ahead of East Lynne Theater Debut

Visitors to Cape May’s Washington Street Mall will have a chance to encounter some of America’s most celebrated comedy legends as Philadelphia actress Jen Childs brings them to life during a special public appearance today!.

The event serves as a preview of East Lynne Theater Company’s upcoming production of “Funny Girls,” a one-woman performance starring Childs that runs July 24 through Aug. 4 at the Clemans Theater for the Arts at Allen AME Church.

Throughout the morning and early afternoon, Childs will portray legendary comedians Mae West, Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers and Gilda Radner while visiting local businesses, interacting with shoppers and strolling the pedestrian mall.

The appearances begin at 10:30 a.m. with Mae West stopping at Queen May, where the character will be adorned with approximately $1 million in jewelry. At 11:30 a.m., Phyllis Diller will visit Just For Laughs, followed by Joan Rivers walking the mall at 12:15 p.m. asking shoppers about their fashion choices. The afternoon concludes at 1 p.m. with Gilda Radner visiting Fine Fellows Creamery for a sweet treat.

“Funny Girls” celebrates the trailblazing women who reshaped American comedy, with Childs portraying an array of influential performers including Sophie Tucker, Gracie Allen, Mae West, Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers and Gilda Radner.

The production launches East Lynne Theater Company’s new Philadelphia Summer Residency Series, an initiative designed to strengthen artistic connections between Philadelphia and Cape May.

Childs is the co-founder and producing artistic director of Philadelphia’s 1812 Productions, where she has created more than 25 original works, including “To the Moon,” “It’s My Party: The Women and Comedy Project,” “The Carols,” and the annual political satire “This Is The Week That Is.” Earlier this year, she premiered another solo production, “She Gets Around.”

Severe Storms Spawn Waterspout and Tornado at Cape May Point

 A waterspout that formed over the Delaware Bay may have moved ashore to became a tornado at Cape May Point during severe thunderstorms Tuesday evening. A tornado warning was issued for Cape May County.

The National Weather Service tracked the rotating storm as it crossed the bay, reporting that it came ashore at approximately 6:13 p.m. Initial reports from the area included downed trees and utility wires, though no major structural damage or injuries were immediately reported.

Photos and video captured by local residents showed the well-defined waterspout extending from the storm cloud to the surface of the bay. Meteorologists noted the visible spray at the base of the funnel, indicating the circulation had reached the water.

The National Weather Service plans to conduct a storm survey to determine the tornado's exact path, intensity and official classification.

Ocean City Joins Growing List of Shore Towns Targeting Oversized Beach Tents

A growing number of Jersey Shore communities are tightening rules on beach tents, canopies and overnight camping equipment as officials seek to improve safety and preserve open sightlines along the shoreline.

Ocean City is the latest municipality considering new regulations that would prohibit camping and overnight sleeping on public property, including beaches, parks and other city-owned land. The proposed ordinance would also ban leaving camping gear or personal belongings unattended in those areas.

The proposal comes as beach officials across the Jersey Shore report an increase in oversized canopy tents, pop-up shelters and enclosed beach structures that have become increasingly popular over the past decade.

Lifeguards and emergency responders say the large structures can obstruct their view of swimmers, making it more difficult to spot people in distress. They also can slow emergency response efforts by limiting access across crowded beaches. Strong coastal winds present an additional hazard, with unsecured umbrellas and tents capable of becoming airborne.

According to Shore Local, at least 23 Jersey Shore municipalities have adopted or significantly strengthened restrictions on beach tents and canopies. Communities with regulations include Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Wildwood Crest, Cape May, Long Beach Township, Mantoloking and Bay Head.

While regulations vary from town to town, many communities prohibit enclosed tents, restrict the size of canopies or ban certain shade structures during lifeguard-protected hours to maintain clear sightlines.

Officials emphasized that Ocean City's proposed ordinance is aimed at preventing overnight camping and temporary encampments rather than discouraging beachgoers from relaxing during the day. Visitors would still be able to nap in beach chairs or on towels, but using sleeping bags, cots, tents or other camping equipment for overnight stays would be prohibited.

As New Jersey's beaches continue attracting record summer crowds, municipalities are working to balance visitors' desire for shade and comfort with the need to maintain safe, accessible beaches for everyone.
