Cape May Point Arts and Science Center to Host Lenape Nation's 2026 River Journey Finale

The Cape May Point Arts and Science Center will welcome the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania August 14th and 15th as the organization concludes its quadrennial Rising Nation River Journey with a day of cultural programming, a ceremonial treaty signing, and an evening concert.

Held every four years, the journey begins in Hancock, New York, and follows the Delaware River south to Cape May Point. The nine-day expedition highlights Lenape history and traditions while promoting environmental stewardship and greater awareness of the Delaware River watershed and the Lenapehonkink homeland.

The day's activities will begin at 11 a.m. with educational exhibits, craft demonstrations, and opportunities for visitors to learn more about Native American culture and traditions. From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., participants will gather for the ceremonial signing of the Treaty of Renewed Friendship, an event that symbolizes the continuing relationship between Indigenous communities and the region they have long called home.

The afternoon schedule will also include storytelling sessions, drumming performances, and additional cultural presentations designed for audiences of all ages.

The celebration will continue with the Rising Nation River Journey Concert from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center, located at 101 Lehigh Ave. The performance marks the completion of the Lenape Nation's journey down the Delaware River and will feature an accomplished lineup of Native American musicians and performers.

Featured artists include Bill Miller, a three-time Grammy Award-winning flute player and singer-songwriter; Jim Beer, an award-nominated Lenape musician; and Stoney's Boys, a Native American drumming group.

Admission to all events is free, although donations will be accepted to help support the 2026 River Journey and future treaty-signing activities. Organizers are also seeking assistance from community groups, businesses, and individuals in the form of financial contributions and gift cards to help offset expenses related to food, accommodations, transportation, and boat rentals.

Organizers say the journey's broader mission is to strengthen community partnerships while encouraging environmental responsibility and preserving Lenape culture and heritage for future generations.

 

Caring for Kids Celebrates 25 Years of Service in Cape May County

For a quarter century, Caring for Kids Cape May County has provided support and resources to children, individuals and families facing challenging circumstances throughout the region.

Operating from its Mechanic Street location in Cape May Court House, the nonprofit organization helped establish one of Cape May County's first food pantries, which continues to serve residents today as part of the organization's broader mission of connecting families with food, essential supplies and community services.

Caring for Kids will celebrate its 25th anniversary during its second annual Safe & Sound fundraiser on Sept. 10 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at South 9 Bar & Grille in Cape May Court House.

Throughout the years, the organization has partnered with volunteers, businesses, donors and community groups to respond to the evolving needs of local families. Although programs and services have changed over time, the organization's mission has remained focused on providing stability, guidance and support to residents throughout Cape May County.

Organization leaders say the anniversary is an opportunity to recognize the many community members who have contributed their time, resources and efforts to help families in need over the past 25 years.

This year's event will also honor Chrissy Casiello and Josh Mercado of No Limits Academy for their commitment to supporting local children and young people.

The evening will feature a buffet dinner, a silent auction and live entertainment by the band Bittersweet. Tickets are available for $35, and sponsorship and vendor opportunities remain open.

Founded in 1995, Caring for Kids has become widely recognized for its work in strengthening families, encouraging early childhood development and expanding access to essential resources. The organization became New Jersey's first Blue Ribbon affiliate of the Parents as Teachers home visitation program, providing families with educational support, developmental screenings and guidance designed to improve school readiness.

In addition to its home visitation programs, Caring for Kids operates a food pantry, hosts educational events and workshops, connects families with vital services and organizes community initiatives, including an annual baby shower and ongoing donation drives.

Residents interested in supporting the organization can volunteer at the food pantry, contribute gently used sneakers to donation programs or attend the upcoming fundraiser.

Historic Cold Spring Village to Host Annual Seafaring and Maritime Celebration

Historic Cold Spring Village will once again embrace its nautical heritage when the annual Seafaring and Maritime Celebration returns on Saturday, Aug. 16, and Sunday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The family-friendly event celebrates the rich maritime history of Cape May while transforming the village grounds into a bustling waterfront scene filled with pirates, Vikings, music, exhibits, and activities for visitors of all ages.

One of the weekend's most anticipated attractions is the popular "Pillage the Village" treasure hunt. Thousands of pirate coins will be hidden throughout the grounds, allowing children to search for treasure and exchange their discoveries for candy and prizes at the Booty Table.

The celebration will feature appearances by Captain Black, Main Deck Productions, Pirates of Fortune Folly, and the Clan of the Raven Vikings, whose members will share stories and demonstrations highlighting life during the Viking Age. Visitors can also enjoy live performances by The Sea Dogs and Jolly Shore Leave, both known for traditional sea shanties and lively maritime music.

Several regional organizations will participate in the festivities, including the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Cape May Maritime Museum, the Bayshore Center at Bivalve, the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center, and the Overfalls Lightship Foundation.

Guests can also visit Pirate Pete's Soda Pop Co., browse specialty merchandise created for the event by Shore Threadz, and explore the living history museum's exhibits and historic buildings.

The annual celebration has become a summertime tradition in Cape May County, offering a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to experience the region's deep connection to the sea while enjoying a weekend of family entertainment
