 Zebra Naming Contest Raises More Than $21,000 for Cape May County Zoo

A newborn zebra at the Cape May County Park and Zoo officially has a name after thousands of dollars were raised to support the zoo’s animals.

Gemma was selected as the winning name for the female zebra foal born July 17, 2026, following a public naming contest organized by the zoo.

The contest gave supporters a choice among three finalists — Gemma, Gloria and Terra. Instead of casting traditional ballots, participants voted by making monetary donations online or in person at the zoo entrance.

By the end of the contest, Gemma came out on top, while the fundraiser generated more than $21,000 for the care and feeding of animals at the Cape May County Zoo.

The naming fundraiser provided the public with an opportunity to take part in welcoming one of the zoo’s newest arrivals while contributing directly to animal care.

Gemma can be seen at the Cape May County Park and Zoo in Cape May Court House.

AirFest 2026 Brings Historic World War II Aircraft to Cape May Airport

The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum will welcome aviation fans to AirFest 2026 from Sept. 3 through Sept. 6 at historic Hangar #1 at Cape May Airport.

The four-day event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and is expected to feature the largest collection of visiting aircraft the museum has assembled for AirFest. The annual event is also the museum’s biggest fundraiser.

One of this year’s featured aircraft is the C-47 “Placid Lassie,” a World War II combat veteran built in 1943. The aircraft crossed the English Channel twice on D-Day and later participated in Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity. Visitors will be able to tour the aircraft and get a closer look at the conditions experienced by wartime crews.

AirFest will also feature a reproduction of the Messerschmitt Me 262, the world’s first operational jet fighter, along with several other historic aircraft. The lineup includes the TBM Avenger “Doris Mae,” a Japanese A6M Zero replica, a Fuji LM-1, a Beechcraft T-34 Mentor, SNJ/AT-6 Texans, the Stinson OY-1 Sentinel “Gayle Ann,” the Fairchild UC-61 Forwarder “Miss Cherrie II,” a Yak-52TD and a restored 1943 Fairchild PT-26 Cornell.

Unlike a traditional air show centered on aerial performances, AirFest is primarily a ground-viewing and static-display event. Visitors can see aircraft up close, meet pilots and crews, explore military vehicles and fire trucks, and take part in aviation, public-safety and STEM exhibits.

The event will also include living-history reenactors, museums and historical organizations, authors, vendors, food trucks, live entertainment and family activities. Admission includes access to the museum’s collection of 28 aircraft and helicopters.

The location itself carries significant World War II history. Naval Air Station Wildwood operated as a dive-bomber training facility, where young naval aviators prepared for combat between 1943 and 1945. The museum honors the 42 naval aviators who died while training at the base during that period.

AirFest 2026 will be held Sept. 3-6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, 500 Forrestal Road at Cape May Airport.

Ocean City Caps Summer Series With Visit From Phillie Phanatic

Ocean City is looking to end the summer with a bang, packing the final days of August with family entertainment, longtime traditions and a special visit from one of Philadelphia’s most recognizable mascots. As the shore reluctantly begins to say goodbye to another summer season, the city is giving residents and visitors plenty of reasons to squeeze in a few more nights of fun before Labor Day.

The Phillie Phanatic is heading down the shore as Ocean City prepares to close out its inaugural 34th Street Sandcastle Park Summer Entertainment Series.

The Philadelphia Phillies mascot will make a special appearance Wednesday, Aug. 26, during “Phillies Week” at Sandcastle Park. The free family event will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the park on the 3400 block between West and Asbury avenues.

Families are encouraged to wear their favorite Phillies gear for the celebration. Along with the Phanatic’s antics, the evening will include a DJ, face painting, balloon art and other family entertainment.

The event marks the season finale of the 34th Street Sandcastle Park Summer Entertainment Series, which debuted this year as a new weekly attraction at the 34th Street gateway into Ocean City.

The Phanatic’s visit comes during a week filled with final performances and activities as Ocean City’s summer calendar begins winding down.

Tuesday, Aug. 25, marks the final Funtastic Tuesday of the season, with entertainment, face painters and balloon artists along Asbury Avenue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mummers Night follows from 7 to 9 p.m., with string bands performing along the Boardwalk between Sixth and 14th streets.

Wednesday starts with free Pilates on the Sixth Street beach at 8 a.m. The weekly Farmers Market will also be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Ocean City Tabernacle and will continue through Sept. 9.

Wednesday evening will feature the season’s final guided Beach Walk at 6:30 p.m. at 59th Street and Central Avenue. The final Family Night of the summer will bring magicians, musicians, characters and other entertainers to the Boardwalk between Sixth and 14th streets.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, the final Market Days will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Asbury Avenue. The last Mummers Night of the season follows from 7 to 9 p.m. on the Boardwalk.

Free beach exercise programs will continue a little longer, with a low-impact class scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Sixth Street. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday exercise series continues through Sept. 4.

The week concludes Sunday, Aug. 30, with “Four Magnificent Male Icons” at the Music Pier. The 7:30 p.m. concert will feature music associated with Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Elvis Presley and Bobby Darin.

With Labor Day approaching, this week offers visitors and residents some of their final opportunities of 2026 to enjoy Ocean City’s signature summer traditions.
