The leadership and decision-making of President Dwight D. Eisenhower will take center stage in Cape May this fall when his granddaughter, author Susan Eisenhower, headlines Cape May MAC’s annual Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series.

The 14th annual event, titled Contemporary Ike: The Art of Strategic Leadership, is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, at 5 p.m. at Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave.

Susan Eisenhower will explore how the leadership principles that guided her grandfather through some of the 20th century’s most consequential events could apply to challenges facing the world today.

Dwight D. Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II before becoming the 34th president of the United States. His military and political careers required decisions involving immediate crises as well as their potential long-term consequences.

The Cape May program will examine Eisenhower’s approach to strategic thinking and the leadership skills he employed during both his military service and presidency. Susan Eisenhower will also consider how he balanced careful analysis with an understanding of people and personal relationships.

Susan Eisenhower is the author of How Ike Led: The Principles Behind Eisenhower’s Biggest Decisions, which examines her grandfather’s approach to leadership through pivotal moments in his career and presidency.

The presentation is designed to connect those historical lessons with contemporary questions about leadership, strategy and decision-making.

Audience members will also have an opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with Eisenhower following the lecture.

The program is part of Cape May MAC’s Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series, which uses historical figures and events to examine issues with continuing relevance.

Good Manners at the Shore: Cape May, Avalon Beaches Earn National Recognition

Two Cape May County beaches are getting national recognition for something Shore visitors can appreciate: good beach manners.

Cape May’s Cove and Avalon’s South End Beaches were recognized in a national survey of 3,011 Americans examining beach etiquette. The survey,  conducted by online travel company Exoticca, polled 3,011 Americans about beach behavior and asked respondents to consider factors that can have a major impact on a day at the Shore, including cleanliness, crowding, noise, respect for personal space and whether a beach generally feels relaxed or chaotic.

 The Cove, located at the western end of Cape May’s beachfront, stood out for its courteous atmosphere and the character of the surrounding resort.

Cape May has long distinguished itself from many other Shore destinations with its Victorian architecture, historic accommodations and strong family-tourism identity. The survey results suggest visitors also associate its beachfront with a more orderly and relaxed experience. The Cove was characterized as a place where beachgoers tend to value calm surroundings over a party atmosphere, helping it earn recognition for particularly strong beach etiquette.

Farther north in Cape May County, Avalon’s South End Beaches also received high marks.

Avalon is known for broad beaches, an upscale residential character and its familiar “Cooler by a Mile” identity. Its South End was recognized for cleanliness, relatively low noise and a family-oriented atmosphere. The survey also credited the area with maintaining an environment where visitors generally respect the space of other beachgoers. That can be particularly important during the height of the Jersey Shore summer season, when crowded beaches can bring conflicts over everything from loud music and oversized setups to trash and personal space.

Residents Warn Ocean City Hotel Decision Could Set Boardwalk Development Precedent

Ocean City residents are urging City Council to proceed cautiously with a proposed $150 million, 252-room hotel at the former Wonderland Pier site. Opponents fear the project could create a framework that encourages additional Boardwalk properties to move away from entertainment uses, although city officials have indicated projects would be evaluated case by case.

Critics also question whether additional hotel development is needed, while the Boardwalk subcommittee’s lodging discussion did not quantify the age or condition of the city’s existing accommodations. Supporters view the hotel as a potential tourism and economic catalyst. Council took no formal action at the special meeting.
