 Mummers Take Over North Wildwood This Weekend for Annual September Tradition

The sights, sounds and signature strut of Philadelphia's Mummers will take over Olde New Jersey Avenue this weekend as New Year's in North Wildwood returns for two days of festivities.

The annual celebration will be held Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, bringing more than a dozen string bands to North Wildwood for performances, a dance contest and Saturday evening's Mummers Parade.

Festivities begin at 7 p.m. Friday with the STRUT Dance Contest on Olde New Jersey Avenue. String band captains will show off their dancing skills while music accompanies the competition.

The celebration continues Saturday when more than a dozen string bands take to the streets, including some of the top performers from Philadelphia's 2026 New Year's Day Mummers Parade.

Saturday's parade steps off at 5 p.m. on Olde New Jersey Avenue. The route begins at 2nd Street and continues north to Spruce Avenue.

FOX 29 personality Bob Kelly will serve as emcee for the sixth year.

The North Wildwood event offers spectators an opportunity to see the Mummers in a setting considerably different from their traditional New Year's Day celebration in Philadelphia. Performers will bring their colorful costumes, choreographed routines and string band music to the shore, with spectators able to watch from along Olde New Jersey Avenue.

The entire event is free and open to the public.

New Year's in North Wildwood has become a September tradition that brings a taste of Philadelphia's famous New Year's celebration to the Jersey Shore before the summer season officially fades away.

The STRUT Dance Contest begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11. The Mummers Parade begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.

Veteran Airshow Pilot Safely Lands Plane at Robert Moses After Engine Failure

A veteran aerobatic pilot escaped injury Wednesday morning after an apparent engine failure forced him to make an emergency landing in an empty parking lot at Robert Moses State Park.

David Windmiller, 62, of Melville, was flying a single-seat Zivko Edge 540 when the aircraft experienced mechanical trouble less than 10 minutes after departing Republic Airport in Farmingdale on Sept. 9.

Windmiller, a veteran performer who appears annually in the Air Show at Jones Beach, had taken off to practice ahead of an airshow scheduled for the following day in Cape May, New Jersey. While flying over the Robert Moses Beach area, the aircraft's propeller stopped, leaving Windmiller with little time to identify a safe place to bring the plane down.

He spotted the vacant Field 4 parking lot at Robert Moses State Park and glided the aircraft onto the pavement. The lot was empty and closed for the season, allowing the emergency landing to be completed without striking vehicles, people or park property.

Windmiller was the only person aboard and was not injured. Officials also reported no injuries on the ground and no damage to park property.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident and the mechanical problem that caused the emergency landing. A preliminary report is expected as part of the agency's investigation.

Learn About Monarch Butterflies at Free Cape May Nature Program

Visitors can get an up-close look at monarch butterfly conservation efforts during a free, family-friendly program at New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May.

The program introduces visitors to the Monarch Monitoring Project and the work being done to study and support monarch butterflies in Cape May. Depending on the day’s activities, participants may have an opportunity to watch project staff tag monarch butterflies, care for gardens that provide important habitat, or carry out other monitoring and conservation work.

The program is open to families and visitors of all ages, and no preregistration or reservations are required.

Activities take place at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Ave., Cape May.

Participation is free. Contributions to the Monarch Monitoring Project are welcomed and help support the conservation initiative.
