 Track a Monarch: Cape May Point Event Turns Visitors Into Community Scientists

Yes, another article about the Monarch Butterflies, but it IS Monarch season in Cape May and visitors to Cape May Point will have an opportunity this month to see how tiny tracking devices are helping researchers follow monarch butterflies during their remarkable migration to Mexico.

The Cape May Point Arts and Science Center will host a free Monarch Butterfly Transmitter Tagging Demonstration from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 26. The public event is part of Project Monarch, a community science initiative using new technology to study the movements of migrating monarchs.

The project is being conducted in collaboration with Cellular Tracking Technologies and uses ultra-lightweight BlūMorpho solar-powered radio transmitters. Weighing about 60 milligrams — roughly the weight of a grain of rice — the devices can be attached to monarch butterflies and used to gather information about their movements.

The technology is designed to help researchers and community scientists better understand the butterflies’ migration from the Cape May area toward their overwintering grounds in Mexico.

Members of the public can see the tagging process during the demonstration and learn how the tracking technology works. Visitors can also participate in the research by using the Project Monarch app on their smartphones to detect radio-tagged butterflies and upload observations.

The initiative gives residents and visitors an opportunity to contribute directly to a larger scientific effort while learning about monarch migration and conservation.

The Sept. 26 demonstration will take place at the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center. Admission is free and the event is open to the general public. Donations are encouraged to help support the project and its continuing research.

Participants interested in helping detect tagged butterflies are encouraged to download the Project Monarch app for their smartphones before attending.

TEDxCapeMay Announces Eight Speakers for 2026 ‘Vital Signs’ Event

TEDxCapeMay will return to Cape May this fall for its 15th season, bringing eight speakers to the Cape May Convention Hall for an afternoon focused on health, community, technology, the environment and human connection.

The 2026 event, titled “Vital Signs,” is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4, from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Organizers say this year’s program will explore the pursuit of well-being for individuals, communities and the wider world.

TEDxCapeMay began in 2012 as a locally organized event inspired by the TED conference format. According to organizers, presentations produced through TEDxCapeMay have accumulated more than 14 million views worldwide.

This year’s program features speakers from medicine, higher education, law, environmental science, the arts and other fields.

Kathryn Landis, an adjunct assistant professor at New York University and Fortune 500 consultant, will discuss how avoided decisions can ultimately become defining choices.

Dr. Stephen Trzeciak, chief of medicine at Cooper University Health Care and professor and chair of medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, will present a talk focused on the effects and importance of hope.

Best-selling author and workplace culture advocate Chester Elton will explore how gratitude can be deliberately incorporated into everyday life.

Ryan Abbott, a professor of law and health sciences at the University of Surrey School of Law and an adjunct associate professor of medicine at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, will examine artificial intelligence, invention and the implications of emerging technology.

Nicole Nuttall, chair of the Board of Directors of the Completed Life Initiative, will address planning for the end of life and the role preparation can play in providing peace and confidence.

Paula Bontempi, a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School and former deputy director of NASA’s Earth Science Division, will focus on monitoring the health of the planet and recognizing environmental warning signs.

New Jersey muralist, public artist and educator Leon Rainbow, founder of Jersey Fresh Jam, will examine what neighborhood walls and public art can reveal about community and human connection.

Marine biologist and Kai co-founder Liberty Denman will discuss fisheries management and how scientific research can be combined with the lived experience of people working on and around the water.

The event is being presented in conjunction with Cape May MAC.

Tickets are $65 and include admission to the main TEDxCapeMay program, an open-bar reception at Congress Hall Hotel and admission to two TEDxCapeMay Salon events.

TEDx events are independently organized under the broader TED program, which allows local organizers to create community events featuring live speakers and TED-style presentations. TED traces its roots to a 1984 conference centered on technology, entertainment and design, and its talks began reaching a much larger global audience after TED presentations were made available online in 2006.

Boo at the Zoo Returns to Cape May County With Costumes, Candy and Family Fun

Halloween fun is returning to the Cape May County Park & Zoo this fall with the annual Boo at the Zoo celebration, offering families a free day of costumes, candy, activities and animals.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cape May County Park & Zoo, 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House.

Sponsored by the Cape May County Board of Commissioners, Boo at the Zoo is free and open to the public. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to arrive in costume and enjoy a variety of Halloween-themed attractions throughout the event.

Activities are expected to include games, candy, a craft station, entertainment, animal exhibits, an inflatable obstacle course and a pirate ship attraction.

A Halloween costume contest will be one of the day's featured activities. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the contest starting at 11 a.m. An awards presentation will follow, along with entertainment and appearances by some of the zoo's ambassador animals.

Boo at the Zoo combines traditional Halloween activities with an opportunity for families to explore one of Cape May County's best-known attractions. The zoo is home to hundreds of animals representing approximately 250 species and offers free admission throughout the year, with donations appreciated.

The Cape May County Park surrounding the zoo also features recreational amenities including playgrounds, picnic areas, walking trails and open spaces.

There is no rain date scheduled for Boo at the Zoo.
