 Nature Center of Cape May Goes After Dark for Adults-Only Night Shift

When daylight fades over Cape May this weekend, the Nature Center will stay open for an adults-only evening featuring animals, nocturnal insects, a bonfire and s’mores under the stars.

The Nature Center of Cape May will host “Night Shift at the Nature Center” on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at 1600 Delaware Ave.

The after-hours program, open to guests 18 and older, offers a different way to experience the center after its daytime activities have ended.

Visitors will have an opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the Nature Center’s exhibits and meet some of its ambassador animals before heading outdoors to explore wildlife that becomes active after sunset.

One of the evening’s featured activities will be a moth-sheeting demonstration focused on nocturnal insects.

Moth sheeting typically uses a light and a light-colored sheet to attract nighttime insects, allowing participants to observe moths and other species that can easily go unnoticed during the day. The activity gives guests a close-up look at a side of Cape May’s natural environment that emerges after dark.

The evening will conclude around a bonfire, where participants can socialize and enjoy complimentary s’mores beneath the night sky.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or picnic blankets for the outdoor portion of the program. The event is also BYOB.

Admission is $25 for New Jersey Audubon members and $30 for nonmembers.

Cape May is widely known for its birding and wildlife opportunities, but Night Shift turns the focus toward what happens after sunset. Between encounters with ambassador animals and a search for nighttime insects, the program offers adults an opportunity to experience the Nature Center from a different perspective.

And after the exploring is finished, the evening ends simply — gathered around a fire with s’mores under the Cape May sky.

Hundreds of Fire Trucks to Fill Wildwood for 51st Annual Firefighters Parade

The 51st Annual New Jersey State Firefighter’s Convention and NJ Fire Expo returns to the Wildwoods on Friday, September 18, and Saturday, September 19, 2026, bringing thousands of firefighters, fire companies, emergency vehicles, vendors and spectators to the Jersey Shore.

Events will be centered around the Wildwoods Convention Center, where the NJ Fire Expo will feature modern fire apparatus, emergency equipment, tools and products used throughout the fire service. The expo runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Friday will also include the convention’s memorial service and official business, along with the Fire Hero Beach Bash at Seaport Pier in North Wildwood beginning at 4 p.m.

The weekend’s biggest public attraction arrives Saturday afternoon when the New Jersey State Firefighters Memorial Parade steps off at 2 p.m. The parade begins at Cresse and New Jersey avenues and travels north along New Jersey Avenue to 21st Avenue. Spectators can expect hundreds of modern and antique fire vehicles, marching bands, firefighters in dress uniforms and departments representing communities from across New Jersey.

Visitors should expect significant traffic and parking challenges throughout the weekend, particularly Saturday before and after the parade. Those hoping to watch from New Jersey Avenue should arrive early to find parking and secure a viewing location.

The parade can also become extremely loud as participating fire apparatus use sirens and air horns along the route. Parents of young children and anyone with sensory sensitivities should consider bringing hearing protection. Pets frightened by sudden or sustained loud noises may be more comfortable away from the parade area.

The annual convention has become a major September tradition in the Wildwoods, combining official fire service activities with an expo and one of the region’s largest displays of firefighting apparatus. The weekend concludes Saturday evening with an awards ceremony scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Wildwoods Convention Center.

Major North Wildwood Boardwalk Rebuild Begins October 5

North Wildwood plans to begin two simultaneous Boardwalk reconstruction projects on October 5, 2026, with completion targeted for around Easter 2027. Crews will rebuild a southern section from approximately 23rd Avenue to 24½ Avenue while beginning a second project near 16th Avenue.

The work is supported in part by $10.3 million from New Jersey’s Boardwalk Preservation Fund. Rather than simply replacing decking, North Wildwood’s reconstruction removes sections down to the sand so crews can install new pilings, supporting structures and infrastructure before rebuilding the Boardwalk above.
