Coastal Storm Threatens Jersey Shore With Flooding, 50-MPH Winds

A slow-moving coastal storm is raising concerns about flooding, damaging winds and beach erosion along the Jersey Shore, with conditions expected to worsen into Friday and Saturday.

A low-pressure system offshore is producing persistent onshore winds, pushing ocean water toward the coast. Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties are among the areas facing weather alerts and advisories, with wind gusts potentially reaching 50 mph.

A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 2 a.m. Saturday for Ocean, Atlantic, Cape May and southeastern Burlington counties. Forecast conditions call for one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying locations near shorelines and tidal waterways.

The prolonged onshore flow increases the potential for moderate coastal and tidal flooding because water can accumulate along the coast and in back bays over multiple tide cycles. The approaching full moon is also contributing to higher astronomical tides, further increasing the flooding threat.

Flooding could extend beyond oceanfront communities. Areas along tidal waterways, including the Delaware River toward Trenton, could also experience elevated water levels.

Back-bay communities are particularly vulnerable because persistent winds can prevent water from draining between high-tide cycles. Barnegat Bay and back bays in Monmouth County are among the locations facing that concern.

Residents in flood-prone neighborhoods are being encouraged to prepare before water begins covering roads. Moving vehicles to higher ground can help prevent saltwater damage, while motorists should be prepared for road closures and potentially impassable streets.

Atlantic City officials are also preparing for significant impacts over the next 24 to 48 hours. Flood-prone neighborhoods including Bungalow Park and areas around Florida and California avenues could experience low to moderate flooding. Officials warned that more than a foot of water could cover some city streets.

The Wave Parking Garage is being made available for residents who need to relocate vehicles from vulnerable areas, with access expected to continue until 1 p.m. Saturday.

The most significant storm impacts in Atlantic City are expected from Friday afternoon into Saturday. Emergency officials are preparing for the possibility that flooding could become more severe than currently forecast.

The National Weather Service warns that widespread roadway flooding is possible in coastal and bayside communities as well as along inland tidal waterways. Many roads could become impassable, and vulnerable structures could begin experiencing damage. Moderate tidal flooding may continue into the weekend, and the possibility of major tidal flooding cannot be ruled out.

Beach erosion and rough surf are additional concerns as persistent winds and waves batter the coastline.

The weather is also affecting weekend activities. Residents and visitors should check directly with organizers and municipalities before traveling to scheduled events. It looks like Cape May's Oktoberfest scheduled for Saturday has already been canceled, along with its Sunday rain date, according to the information provided by local officials.

Residents should continue monitoring updated forecasts, local emergency notifications and road conditions as the storm develops.

Fall Fun Is Coming to the Cape May County Zoo

While we are currently in danger of having a few weather related cancellations, Fall is shaping up to be a busy season at the Cape May County Park & Zoo, with educational programs, conservation activities and Halloween festivities scheduled throughout October.

The zoo’s fall calendar includes programs for children and adults, volunteer opportunities and the return of the popular Boo at the Zoo celebration. Additional holiday and Christmas programming is expected to be announced separately.

The fall schedule begins Oct. 3 with Conservation Day (mentioned in yesterday’s newsletter), an opportunity for community organizations to support wildlife conservation.

The zoo is seeking participation from 4-H organizations, Scout troops, high school clubs and other community groups. Participants will help raise awareness and funds for endangered species while having an opportunity to earn volunteer hours.

Young children can get an introduction to wildlife and the natural world during the zoo’s Littlest Explorers program on Oct. 12.

The nature-focused toddler program combines activities intended to introduce children to animals and nature while encouraging the development of fine motor skills.

Adults will have their own opportunity to learn more about wildlife when Creature Conversations returns Oct. 21.

The educational program explores wildlife topics with Cape May County Zoo educators and includes a presentation, a question-and-answer session and an opportunity to see some of the zoo’s ambassador animals up close.

One of the zoo’s biggest fall celebrations arrives Saturday, Oct. 24, when Boo at the Zoo takes over the grounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to wear costumes for the family-friendly Halloween celebration. Planned activities include children’s games, candy giveaways, live entertainment, animal encounters and an inflatable obstacle course. A costume contest is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with registration opening at 10 a.m.

The October events are part of a broader fall season at the Cape May County Park & Zoo, with additional activities expected as the zoo moves toward the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

Italian Food, Music and Tradition Take Over Fox Park for Wildwood Festival

The 22nd annual Olde Tyme Italian Festival will bring two days of Italian food, music, cultural traditions and family activities to Fox Park in Wildwood on Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026. Hosted by the Sons of Italy Sylvester Grande Lodge #1838, the free festival runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. Visitors can enjoy Italian favorites including sausage and peppers, roasted pork, pasta, chicken cutlets, cannoli and zeppole, along with vendors, children's activities, raffles and a tomato pie eating contest.

Friday begins with a Mass and Procession of Saints at 5 p.m., followed by performances from Michael Jones, Stiletto & Sax, Bobby Wilson, The Chiclettes and Dennis Tufano of the Buckinghams. Saturday features a full day of entertainment, including DJ Joe Notes, Just in Time, Zach Taglioli, Billy Carlucci and tribute performances celebrating Roy Orbison, Barry White and Donna Summer. Admission is free, and proceeds from the festival support the lodge's community mission.
