Cape May Celebrates Its Victorian Heritage Oct. 9-12

Cape May will turn back the clock this October as its annual Victorian Weekend returns with four days of history, architecture, vintage entertainment and special events celebrating the seaside city's Victorian heritage.

The 2026 celebration is scheduled for Oct. 9-12 and is presented by Cape May MAC (Museums + Arts + Culture). Events throughout the weekend will highlight the architecture and history that have helped make Cape May one of the country's best-known historic resort communities.

Visitors will have opportunities to step inside historic properties during house tours and learn more about the city's distinctive buildings during architectural walking tours. Trolley tours and visits to historic sites will offer additional ways to explore Cape May's past.

The weekend will also feature a vintage base ball game played according to rules from the late 1800s. Admission to the game is free, and vintage-style ballpark treats will be available for purchase.

History will take center stage during the 13th annual Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series. Carla J. Mulford, Ph.D., a professor of English at Penn State University, and Michelle Craig McDonald, Ph.D., director of the Library & Museum, are scheduled to present a program examining Benjamin Franklin and the revolutionary era.

Vintage fashion will also be part of the festivities. A special luncheon program presented by Lynne Anne Donchez will explore the history and appeal of hats.

Other activities planned during Victorian Weekend include a crafts and collectibles show, historic house experiences and appearances by riders on antique-style high-wheel bicycles.

Cape May's concentration of preserved 19th-century buildings provides the backdrop for the annual celebration. The city is designated a National Historic Landmark District and has become closely associated with Victorian architecture.

Cape May MAC is a nonprofit organization focused on preserving and interpreting the region's history and culture. The organization operates several prominent Cape May County historic attractions, including the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse and the World War II Lookout Tower.

Tickets for applicable Victorian Weekend tours and programs can be purchased through Cape May MAC at capemaymac.org, by calling 609-884-5404 or at the organization's visitor service locations.

35-Foot Humpback Whale, 80 Dolphins Spotted Off Cape May

Passengers aboard a Cape May Whale Watcher tour were treated to an impressive marine wildlife encounter Tuesday, Sept. 29, when a 35-foot humpback whale appeared alongside roughly 80 bottlenose dolphins off Cape May, New Jersey.

Cape May Whale Watcher shared video of the encounter on social media, showing the whale near the tour boat as dolphins moved through the surrounding water. The humpback also raised its fluke above the surface as it swam away, giving passengers a memorable look at one of the region's largest seasonal visitors.

Although seeing a 35-foot whale at close range is impressive, a humpback of that length is not unusually large for the species. Adult humpback whales commonly grow considerably longer, with mature animals often reaching about 45 to 52 feet. A whale measuring around 35 feet is more likely to be a juvenile or young adult.

The large group of bottlenose dolphins added another dimension to Tuesday's sighting. Cape May's offshore waters can produce sizable dolphin gatherings, and the tour company has previously reported encounters involving hundreds of dolphins along with humpback whales.

The company has also documented even more unusual visitors. In 2024, passengers encountered a blue whale, the largest animal species on Earth and a particularly noteworthy sighting for the Cape May tour operator. Blue whales can be identified by characteristics including their mottled blue-gray coloring, relatively small dorsal fin and an exceptionally tall blow.

During Tuesday's encounter, the Cape May Whale Watcher crew stopped the vessel's propulsion while the humpback was nearby and waited for the animal to move a safe distance away before continuing.

For passengers who happened to be aboard, the combination of a humpback whale and dozens of dolphins provided a dramatic reminder of the variety of marine life that can be found just offshore from Cape May.

About 70 Health Care Workers Authorize Strike at North Cape May Facility

About 70 employees at Pelican Pointe Post Acute Nursing & Rehabilitation in North Cape May have unanimously authorized a strike as contract negotiations continue. UFCW Local 152 says the dispute involves wages, scheduled work hours and health benefits and has accused the employer of bargaining delays and unfair labor practices. The authorization does not mean a strike has begun; the union says it intends to provide the required 10-day notice before any walkout.
