The American Soldier’ brings stories of service and sacrifice to Cape May Stage

Actor and playwright Douglas Taurel will bring his acclaimed solo production “The American Soldier” to Cape May Stage for three performances Oct. 23-25.

Inspired by letters written by American service members and their families, the 85-minute production explores the experiences of military personnel across generations and the challenges they and their loved ones can face during war and after returning home.

Taurel portrays multiple characters throughout the performance, using their stories to examine the physical and emotional consequences of military service, as well as sacrifice, family relationships and the transition back to civilian life. The production incorporates both humor and darker material as it presents the experiences of service members and their families.

“The American Soldier” has toured nationally and has also been performed Off-Broadway. The production received a four-star review during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was nominated for an Amnesty International Award for theater excellence. Taurel also performed the work at the Kennedy Center and at the Library of Congress on Veterans Day in 2017.

The Cape May engagement begins with performances at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24. A 3 p.m. matinee is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25.

The production runs approximately 85 minutes without an intermission and is recommended for audiences ages 13 and older. Cape May Stage notes that the show contains emotional themes involving war and sacrifice and periodically includes sounds of war.

Vintage Base Ball Returns to Cape May for Victorian Weekend

Base ball will be played the old-fashioned way in Cape May this October as a pair of vintage games return to Lafayette Street Park during the city's annual Victorian Weekend.

The Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia and the Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester, Pennsylvania, will take the field Saturday, Oct. 10, for two games showcasing the sport as it was played during the 19th century.

Games are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Lafayette Street Park, next to Cape May City Elementary School. Admission is free.

Instead of modern uniforms and equipment, players will take the field dressed in period-style base ball uniforms and recreate the atmosphere of the game's early years.

The teams play according to rules dating to 1864, giving spectators a chance to see a noticeably different version of America's pastime. The vintage rules include underhand pitching, playing without gloves and recording an out when a batted ball is caught on one bounce.

Classic ballpark snacks will be available for purchase during the games.

Spectators can bring lawn chairs or blankets and watch from around the field for a picnic-style afternoon. Pets, alcoholic beverages and glass containers are prohibited.

The vintage games are part of Cape May's Victorian Weekend, presented by Cape May MAC (Museums + Arts + Culture). The annual celebration highlights the city's Victorian-era heritage through historic tours, programs and special events.

The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, followed by the second game at 1 p.m.
