West Cape May Lima Bean Festival Returns Saturday

West Cape May will celebrate its agricultural roots Saturday with the return of one of the borough’s quirkiest and most popular traditions: the annual Lima Bean Festival.

The festival will take place Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Backyard Park, located at 732 Broadway behind the West Cape May Fire House. Admission is free.

The annual event pays tribute to West Cape May’s farming heritage and its history as a major lima bean-growing community, once earning the area recognition as the lima bean capital of the world.

Visitors can expect a variety of food, farm and craft vendors throughout the day, with offerings including specialty foods, handmade arts and crafts, apparel and other merchandise.

Entertainment will include live music from Nolan Quinn. The Great Loudini will also perform a 45-minute magic show beginning at noon.

To make getting to the festival easier, West Cape May will operate a free Jitney shuttle from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pick-up and drop-off locations will include the festival grounds, Wilbraham Park and Park Boulevard. The Jitney will also pick up pedestrians headed toward the festival along Broadway and Park Boulevard.

Out-of-town visitors are encouraged to use free parking available along borough side streets and take advantage of the shuttle service.

The family-friendly festival runs rain or shine from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Victorian Charm Takes Center Stage in Cape May This Holiday Weekend

Cape May is turning back the clock this Columbus Day weekend as the city celebrates its rich Victorian heritage with four days of historic house tours, vintage baseball, architectural walks and special events.

The 54th annual Victorian Weekend, presented by Cape May MAC (Museums+Arts+Culture), runs Friday, October 9, through Monday, October 12. The annual celebration highlights the architecture, history and traditions that have made Cape May one of the nation's most distinctive seaside communities.

Visitors will have an opportunity to step inside historic homes, stroll streets lined with Victorian architecture and experience some of the pastimes enjoyed by earlier generations.

One of the weekend's most entertaining attractions takes place Saturday, October 10, at 11 a.m. at Lafayette Field. A vintage "base ball" game will recreate America's pastime as it was played during the 19th century. Players dressed in period-style uniforms will follow rules dating to 1864, giving spectators a glimpse of baseball's early days.

The game offers a chance to see how much the sport has changed over the past 160 years. From the uniforms to the rules, the experience brings a piece of American history to life.

The Victorian Weekend Historic House Tour is another highlight of the celebration. Scheduled for Sunday, October 11, from 1 to 4 p.m., the self-guided tour gives ticket holders access to a selection of restored private homes, bed-and-breakfast inns and guesthouses.

Cape May is famous for its collection of Victorian architecture. The tour offers visitors a closer look at the craftsmanship, decorative details and architectural styles that have helped define the city's character for generations.

For those who prefer to explore on foot, the Victorian Weekend Architectural Walking Tour provides an opportunity to discover the history behind Cape May's colorful homes and historic streets.

Trolley tours will also operate throughout the weekend. Some combine a narrated ride through the historic district with a guided tour of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, one of Cape May's best-known Victorian landmarks.

The celebration continues Sunday with the Victorian Weekend Crafts & Collectibles Show at the Emlen Physick Estate. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the outdoor event will feature crafts and collectibles in a historic setting.

Visitors can also watch members of the Wheelmen demonstrate their distinctive high-wheel bicycles, commonly known as penny farthings. These towering bicycles were once a familiar sight during the late 1800s and remain one of the most recognizable symbols of the Victorian era.

History enthusiasts will have another opportunity to explore the past Sunday evening.

The 14th annual Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series welcomes Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, on October 11 at 5 p.m.

Her presentation, Contemporary Ike: The Art of Strategic Decision Making, will examine the leadership and decision-making of the nation's 34th president.

The lecture adds another dimension to a weekend devoted to understanding history and its continuing influence.

Victorian Weekend has become a fall tradition in Cape May. It offers residents and visitors another reason to explore the city during the increasingly popular autumn season.

Cape May's Victorian architecture is central to its identity. The city's preserved homes, historic streets and landmarks provide a connection to the days when the seaside resort was becoming a fashionable destination.

Cape May MAC plays a major role in preserving and sharing that history. The nonprofit organization maintains and manages the Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May Lighthouse and World War II Lookout Tower. It also presents educational programs, tours and cultural events throughout the year.

Victorian Weekend brings much of that work together in one four-day celebration.

From the crack of a vintage baseball bat to the sight of a penny-farthing bicycle rolling across the grounds of the Physick Estate, the weekend offers plenty of opportunities to experience Cape May's past.

And with autumn settling over the seaside resort, there may be no better time to enjoy the city's Victorian charm.

Look Up Tonight! Meteor Shower Could Light Up Cape May County Skies

South Jersey skywatchers have a reason to look up tonight as the annual Draconid meteor shower reaches its peak. With little moonlight to interfere, conditions are favorable for catching a glimpse of shooting stars streaking across the October sky.

Unlike many meteor showers that are best viewed after midnight, the Draconids put on their best show during the evening hours. That makes this celestial event especially appealing to families and casual stargazers who would rather enjoy the night sky before bedtime. Meteors may remain visible throughout the evening and into the early morning hours.

Cape May County offers some excellent opportunities for stargazing, especially along its beaches and in less-developed areas away from bright streetlights.

The beaches of Cape May, Cape May Point, Stone Harbor and the Wildwoods offer wide views of the sky. Rural areas of the county may provide darker conditions, depending on nearby lighting.

The key is finding a location with as little artificial light as possible and an unobstructed view of the sky.

The Draconids appear to originate from the constellation Draco, the Dragon, located in the northern sky. Viewers can look generally north, although meteors may streak across almost any part of the sky.

There is no need for a telescope or binoculars. In fact, the naked eye is the best way to enjoy a meteor shower because it allows viewers to take in a much larger portion of the sky.

Give your eyes about 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Avoid looking at your phone, as bright screens can make faint meteors harder to spot.

A beach chair, blanket and a little patience are all that is needed.

Under ideal conditions, the Draconids typically produce around five to 10 meteors per hour. Actual numbers can vary considerably from year to year.

The shower has a reputation for being unpredictable. On rare occasions, the Draconids have produced spectacular meteor storms with hundreds or even thousands of meteors per hour.

Such an outburst is not expected this year, although the possibility of seeing a few bright streaks makes the evening worth watching.

The meteors are created by tiny particles of dust and debris left behind by comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.

Each October, Earth passes through this trail of debris. As the particles enter our atmosphere at tremendous speeds, they heat up and produce the glowing streaks commonly called shooting stars.

Most of these particles are no larger than grains of sand.

This year's timing offers another advantage for skywatchers. The moon is approaching its new phase, leaving the evening sky relatively dark. With less moonlight washing out faint meteors, observers have a better chance of spotting the Draconids. Cloud cover and local light pollution will still play an important role in how many meteors are visible.

The shower remains active through October 10, giving stargazers another opportunity if clouds interfere with tonight's viewing. For Cape May County residents, the Draconids offer a simple way to enjoy one of autumn's natural attractions.

Find a dark spot, dress warmly and give your eyes time to adjust. Then look up. You might just catch a shooting star over the Jersey Shore.
