One Actor, Generations of Heroes: ‘The American Soldier’ Comes to Cape May

The courage, sacrifice and personal struggles of America's military service members will take center stage when The American Soldier, written and performed by Douglas Taurel, arrives at Cape May Stage for three performances from October 23 through October 25, 2026.

Presented at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, the acclaimed solo production explores the human experiences behind military service, bringing to life the stories of American soldiers and their families across generations.

Drawing inspiration from actual letters written by service members and their loved ones, the production journeys through American military history, from the nation's earliest conflicts to modern warfare. Through a series of deeply personal portrayals, Taurel examines the courage, resilience, humor, heartbreak and hope that have shaped the lives of those who serve.

Rather than focusing solely on battles and historical events, The American Soldier explores the emotional realities of military life, including the challenges veterans face when returning home and adjusting to civilian life. The production also examines the lasting impact of war on families, relationships and personal identity.

Throughout the 85-minute performance, Taurel portrays multiple characters, using their individual experiences to illustrate the profound human costs of conflict. His storytelling combines moments of humor and warmth with darker reflections on loss, trauma and the enduring effects of military service.

The production has earned recognition on both national and international stages. The American Soldier received a nomination for an Amnesty International Award for theatrical excellence and earned a four-star rating at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The show has also attracted attention from major publications, including The Huffington Post, The Washington Post and Time Out.

Among its notable appearances are performances associated with the Kennedy Center during presidential inauguration weekend and at the Library of Congress for Veterans Day in 2017. The production has toured extensively throughout the United States, including engagements in New York, Texas, Connecticut, Virginia, Kansas and New Jersey, as well as Off-Broadway appearances.

For Cape May audiences, the upcoming engagement offers an opportunity to experience an intimate theatrical production that places individual stories at the heart of American military history.

The show also encourages audiences to consider the often-overlooked challenges faced by veterans after their service ends, emphasizing that the consequences of war can extend far beyond the battlefield.

As the nation reflects on its military history and the meaning of service, The American Soldier offers a perspective rooted in the experiences of those who have worn the uniform and the families who have supported them.

Cape May Halloween Parade Returns October 25 With Spooky Family Fun

Ghosts, goblins, witches and superheroes will soon take over the streets of Cape May as the city's annual Halloween Parade returns on Sunday, October 25, 2026, bringing an afternoon of costumes, creativity and family-friendly fun to the Jersey Shore.

The popular fall tradition begins at 3 p.m., featuring participants of all ages dressed in imaginative Halloween costumes, along with decorated golf carts, antique automobiles and festive parade entries. Residents and visitors are invited to participate in the procession or gather along the route to enjoy one of Cape May's seasonal community celebrations.

Participation in the Cape May Halloween Parade is free, making the event an affordable activity for families looking to celebrate the spooky season. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. near Perry Street and South Lafayette Street, in the Washington Street area. Costume judging starts at 2:30 p.m., giving participants an opportunity to show off their creativity before the parade gets underway.

Participants are encouraged to arrive early to complete registration and prepare for judging. The event traditionally attracts an assortment of Halloween characters, from classic monsters and witches to princesses, pirates, superheroes and elaborate group costumes. Decorated vehicles, including golf carts and antique cars, add another festive element to the afternoon procession.

The Halloween Parade steps off at 3 p.m. near Carpenters Lane and makes its way through Cape May's historic downtown. The procession travels along Carpenters Lane toward Ocean Street, continues onto Washington Street and concludes at the Emlen Physick Estate. The parade offers spectators an opportunity to enjoy Halloween festivities against the backdrop of Cape May's historic architecture and charming downtown streets.

Families are encouraged to arrive early to find a comfortable viewing location and explore the Washington Street Mall before the festivities begin. Following the parade, participants and spectators can head to the historic Emlen Physick Estate at 1048 Washington Street for the trophy presentation. Awards will recognize outstanding costumes and parade entries, celebrating the creativity and effort of participants.

The celebration also offers visitors a chance to explore Cape May's downtown shopping and dining district. The Washington Street Mall features a variety of locally owned shops, restaurants and specialty businesses, many surrounded by seasonal decorations during October. Visitors can enjoy lunch, browse boutiques or take photographs among the fall displays before finding a spot to watch the parade.

Connolly Dermatology May Reopen Under New Name, Social Media Post Claim

Rumors that Connolly Dermatology could reopen under another business name have renewed controversy following the chain's closure across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

More than 70 former employees have pursued legal action over alleged unpaid wages, while landlords have brought separate claims involving unpaid rent. Patients also reported disruptions to appointments, test results and medical records.

The practice's financial troubles followed a major Medicare reimbursement change affecting a specialized skin cancer treatment.

Although social media posts suggest the business may be reopening under names including Aiden LLC or Connolly Skin Care, those claims have not been independently verified.
