Election 2026: Stockton University to Host Van Drew–Mullock Debate Thursday

Voters in South Jersey will have an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates competing for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District seat when Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew and Democratic challenger Zack Mullock face off in a televised debate Thursday, October 22, at Stockton University. The hourlong debate, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., will take place inside the Campus Center Theatre on Stockton’s Galloway campus. The event is being co-sponsored by the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy and The Press of Atlantic City.

Although the debate will be held without an in-person audience, residents throughout the district will be able to watch the candidates discuss issues affecting South Jersey through a free online livestream. The debate comes as voters prepare for the November 3 general election, with Van Drew seeking another term in Congress and Mullock working to unseat the Republican incumbent.

The matchup will give voters an opportunity to compare the candidates' positions, examine their priorities and evaluate their approaches to representing the district in Washington.

While the public will not be permitted inside the theater during the debate, residents can still participate by submitting questions for consideration ahead of the event. Questions can be emailed to the Hughes Center at [email protected] or to The Press of Atlantic City at [email protected]. Submissions should include CD2 Questions in the subject line.

Nicholas Huba, digital editor of The Press of Atlantic City, and Alyssa Maurice, assistant director of the Hughes Center, will serve as panelists and present questions to both candidates. The discussion is expected to provide insight into the candidates' competing political perspectives and their plans for addressing issues facing residents of the district.

The October 22 debate will begin at 6 p.m. and run approximately 60 minutes.

Residents can watch online through the Hughes Center's official YouTube channel or the Press of Atlantic City's website.

The debate offers an important opportunity for voters to hear from both major-party candidates before heading to the polls in November.

Meet Westley! Cape May County Zoo Welcomes Adorable New Red Kangaroo

The Cape May County Park & Zoo has welcomed an exciting new resident named Westley, a young male red kangaroo who recently made the journey from Canada to South Jersey. Born on July 5, 2024, at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Westley arrived through a collaborative zoological animal management program that supports conservation, responsible breeding and healthy animal populations.

Now just over two years old, Westley is settling into his new surroundings and gradually being introduced to the zoo's existing group of kangaroos, known as a mob. As he becomes more comfortable in his habitat, visitors may have the opportunity to see him exploring his enclosure and getting acquainted with his new companions.

Red kangaroos are the largest living marsupials in the world and are native to Australia's grasslands and deserts. Recognized for their powerful hind legs, impressive jumping abilities and distinctive reddish-brown coats, these fascinating animals are a favorite among wildlife enthusiasts.

Westley's arrival highlights the importance of cooperation between zoological institutions while giving local families and visitors another reason to explore one of Cape May County's most popular attractions. Zoo officials are allowing the young kangaroo time to adjust to his new home as he begins his next chapter at the Cape May County Park & Zoo.
