Cape May’s Original Haunted House Opens Its Gates for Free Halloween Trick-or-Treating

Halloween night is about to get a little more spirited in Cape May as the historic Emlen Physick Estate opens its grounds for an evening of trick-or-treating, spooky surprises, and family-friendly fun.

On Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., families are invited to visit the iconic Victorian mansion at 1048 Washington Street for a free Halloween celebration featuring sweet treats, festive music, and a few mysterious characters.

Known as Cape May’s original haunted house, the 1879 mansion provides the perfect backdrop for an evening filled with Halloween excitement.

Children are encouraged to dress in their favorite Halloween costumes, grab their trick-or-treat bags, and explore the estate grounds, where spooky and silly characters will be waiting to greet visitors.

Along the way, families can enjoy Halloween music, collect candy, and experience the festive atmosphere surrounding one of Cape May’s most recognizable historic landmarks.

One of the evening’s highlights is Scarecrow Alley, a seasonal display featuring imaginative scarecrow creations ranging from funny and whimsical to downright frightening.

Visitors may also encounter a few strange spirits wandering the grounds, adding an extra touch of Halloween mystery to the celebration.

The Emlen Physick Estate is one of Cape May’s best-known Victorian attractions. Built in 1879, the mansion has become a centerpiece of the city's historic and cultural heritage.

Its Gothic-inspired architectural details, sprawling grounds, and long-standing association with ghost stories make it an especially fitting destination for Halloween festivities.

The annual trick-or-treat celebration gives residents and visitors an opportunity to experience the landmark in a fun and festive setting without purchasing an admission ticket.

The event also provides an ideal early-evening stop before families continue trick-or-treating throughout Cape May's neighborhoods.

Halloween festivities extend beyond the Physick Estate. Throughout October, Cape May MAC offers a variety of seasonal attractions, including ghost tours, haunted trolley rides, and theatrical experiences exploring the city's mysterious history.

Among these attractions is Phantoms of the Physick Estate, an immersive performance that brings eerie stories to life inside the historic mansion.

These seasonal activities help make Cape May a popular destination for visitors seeking a blend of Victorian history, coastal charm, and Halloween entertainment.
